2/11/2020 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
Sophomores Nia Clouden and Kayla Belles lead the Spartans with 12 points each.
EVANSTON, Ill. - Sophomore guard Nia Clouden reached double figures for the 20th time this season, as the Michigan State women's basketball team fell to No. 19 Northwestern on the road on Monday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Michigan State falls to 11-12 overall and 4-8 in the Big Ten and have lost five-straight games. First-place Northwestern improves to 20-3 and 10-2 in league play.
Senior guard Nia Clouden once again led Michigan State in scoring with 12 points and seven rebounds. She has led the Spartans in scoring 12 times this season. Clouden shared the team lead in scoring with sophomore forward Kayla Belles who scored 12, while fighting through foul trouble. She scored six of her 12 points in the final period. Senior guard Taryn McCutcheon was close to a double-double with nine points and a team-leading eight rebounds.
Northwestern was led by Lindsey Pulliam who scored a game high 31 points, while Veronica Burton added 23.
McCutcheon drained first two 3-pointers as the Spartans jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead. The Wildcats responded with a 8-0 run to take a 12-9 lead with 5:29 left in the quarter, leading to a MSU timeout. NU eventually jumped out to a 21-9 lead before another McCutcheon trey stopped the run. McCutcheon ended the first quarter with nine points to keep MSU within reach, 24-14.
In the second quarter the Spartans looked to chip away at the Wildcat lead, but 12 first-half turnovers hampered the comeback efforts. After a Burton 3-pointer, NU took a 20-point lead 43-23. The Spartans scored the final two baskets of the half behind buckets from Clouden and freshman center Cydni Dodd.
The Wildcats ended the third quarter with a 9-0 run to take a 66-36 lead. In the final period, MSU got playing time for some of its younger players with freshmen Alyza Winston, Cydni Dodd and Julia Ayrault getting time. Winston ended with five points, while Ayrault added four.
Michigan State will return to the Breslin Center after a pair of road games against ranked teams. The Spartans will take on Rutgers on Thursday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m.
