The Spartans take on the visiting Bulldogs on Saturday at 3 p.m.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State women's tennis hosts Gonzaga on Saturday, Feb. 15 in the only match of the week. The match is set to begin at 3 p.m. at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
The Spartans sit at 5-3 on the season after going 3-0 in matches last week. Michigan State defeated Alabama, 5-2, in Tuscaloosa on Feb. 6 to give the Roll Tide their first loss of the 2020 season, before returning home on Feb. 8 to sweep a doubleheader against Xavier, 4-1, and Montana, 7-0.
SCOUTING GONZAGA
Gonzaga begins the 2020 dual season with a record of 3-4 and is searching for their first road win. Last time out, the Bulldogs fell to Washington State, 4-1, on the road.
This will be only the second-ever meeting between the Bulldogs and Spartans, with the last meeting resulting in a 6-1 Spartan win on March 14, 2009 in a neutral-site match in Seattle, Washington.
Gonzaga head coach D.J. Gurule is in his 15th season at the helm of the Gonzaga women's tennis program.
LAST TIME OUT
MSU swept last weekend's doubleheader on Feb. 8, defeating Xavier, 4-1, and Montana, 7-0.
Sophomore Nicole Stephens clinched both of the Spartans' matches at No. 4 singles, registering a 7-6, 6-2 victory over Xavier's Rachael Reichenbach and posting a 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) win over Montana's Lauren Dunlap. Stephens improves to 6-2 overall at No. 4 singles and has paired with senior Samantha Memije for a 5-3 doubles record.
QUOTING COACH BRUNO
"We need to figure some things out in our doubles. We need this week to get to just work on that here at home. I think Gonzaga is going to be another great challenge for us. They've put together some really good teams in the past; the history of their program is really strong so we have to be ready. It's exciting to have a West coast team coming all the way out here. I know they are coached really well and we can't think too far ahead. We just have to be ready for each and every match."
UP NEXT
The Spartans head out East next weekend, traveling to Hanover, New Hampshire for two matches. MSU will take on UMass on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 1 p.m. in a neutral-site match, before playing Dartmouth on Sunday, Feb. 23 at 11 a.m.
