Spartan Women’s Tennis Shuts Down Gonzaga, 4-0

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's tennis captured its fourth-straight win with an efficient 4-0, win over Gonzaga, Saturday at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
MSU improves to 6-3 with the win and remain undefeated at home with a 4-0 record.
The Spartans took the doubles point starting with sophomores Lauren Lemonds and Nicole Stephens defeating Taylor Gruber and Jenna Sloan, 6-3, at the No. 3 position. The doubles point was clinched at the No. 2 spot with Maja Pietrowicz and Samantha Memije stopping Cate Broerman and Haruna Tsuruta, 6-3.
"We have been struggling with our doubles, so we tried some new teams today, and threw something out there. We just played fundamentally good, solid doubles. If we can do that, we will walk away with a lot of wins. Kudos to the girls for stepping up and doing that no matter what partner they played with," MSU head coach Kim Bruno said.
After taking a 1-0 lead with the doubles point, Michigan State doubled its score when Pietrowicz defeated Gruber in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 5 spot. The Spartans upped the score to 3-0 with another 6-4, 6-1 win, as Lemonds dropped Tsuruta at the No. 3 position. The match was clinched at No. 1 with Mary Lewis' 6-3, 6-4 win over Ketels.
"After a busy week, words can't describe how important it was to get out there and take care of business. The girls were exhausted after playing five matches in eight days, and for us to get a little rest and do things a little differently in practice this week, and we got better today. There is not a question in my mind. That is really promising heading into our next weekend. If we continue this process, I see us starting the Big Ten season hot," Bruno added.
