Pitchers Duel Goes To Clemson, 2-1
2/15/2020 10:32:00 PM | Softball
Clemson, SC– Michigan State and Clemson engaged in a tight battle to close out the second day of the Big Ten – ACC Challenge, with the home team taking away a 2-1 victory thanks to a home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. MSU falls to 1-6, while Clemson is 6-4.
The game featured two freshmen pitchers – Sarah Ladd tied her season-best with five strikeouts and scattered six base hits, while Logan Caymol was equally as effective with five strikeouts, four walks, and four base hits allowed.
The teams were scoreless with one hit each through the third inning – Clemson starter had a pair of strikeouts against three walks, with Sarah Ladd countering with two of each in the same span. MSU broke through with a run in the fourth, as Erica Holt earned a one-out walk and then scored on an RBI triple by Laney Joyner.
Clemson had baserunners three of the first five innings, but Sarah Ladd was steadfast in the circle and didn't allow a runner past second base in that stretch. Grace Mattimore led ff the home half of the sixth with a double into left center, and two outs later Marissa Guimbarda hit her third homer of the season for a 2-1 lead. Sarah Ladd surrendered base hits to the next two runners, but got Abi Stuart to pop out in foul territory to get out of the inning and keep the deficit at 2-1.
Michigan State takes on Clemson in the finale of the Big Ten-ACC Challenge on Sunday at 12:30 pm.
QUOTABLE
"We had made big strides last weekend, and made even more in last night's game against Pitt that we ended up dropping in a walkoff. Our players needed to believe in themselves and in the progress that they had made even though we hadn't been rewarded. We're still learning a lot as we go with so many young players – and I thought in our first game today we held our ground and showed some poise, and then were able to blow things open at the end. In the second game, it was another tight one, and I was really impressed with how our players stayed in a tight game and battled right to the end. I'm proud of the progress and look forward to seeing how it continues as we move week to week."
