2/3/2020 11:12:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Playing close to her hometown, sophomore Nia Clouden scored 17 points and tied her career high with eight boards.
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Injury-plagued Michigan State women's basketball could not handle the many weapons of No. 13 Maryland, falling 94-53, at the XFINITY Center Monday night.
Michigan State was already without seniors Victoria Gaines and Shay Colley, along with redshirt-junior Mardrekia Cook, who are done for the season. Already sidelined with multiple injuries, the Spartans were down two more players on Monday with both sophomore guard Tory Ozment and freshman Julia Ayrault missing the game. Senior guard Taryn McCutcheon also suffered an injury in the third quarter and didn't return.
Michigan State drops to 11-11 overall and 4-7 in the Big Ten and have lost four-straight games. Maryland improves to 17-4 overall and 9-2 in league contests, having won seven in a row.
Playing near her hometown of Owings Mills, Maryland, senior guard Nia Clouden led four Spartans in double-figures with 17 points, with many family and friends, plus former St. Frances High School teammates in attendance.
Monday marked the 19th time this season that she Clouden has reached double figures. She also tied her career-high with eight rebounds. Sophomore forward Kayla Belles also scored in double figures with 14 points to go along with two steals. Freshman center Cydni Dodd stepped up with a career-high six points and added another career high with seven rebounds in 13 minutes of action.
Maryland was led by 22 points off the bench from Ashley Owusu, while Taylor Mikesell scored 21.
After Maryland scored the first five points, Clouden scores the next six-straight and after a Nia Hollie basket, the Spartans took an 8-6 lead. After four turnovers led to a 9-0 run for the Terps, Maryland took a 17-12 lead. The run ballooned to 16-0 run over three minutes and after the first quarter, Maryland led 24-14.
In the second quarter, the Spartan struggles continued as the injuries and the fouls continued to mount for the Spartans. After cutting it to a 10-point game, Maryland used a 10-0 run to take a 20-point lead 40-20. Freshman guard Moira Joiner left in the second quarter with an injury, but she would return in the second half.
Clouden continued to grind for the Spartans, scoring five of the first seven of the second half for Michigan State, before McCutcheon went down with a leg injury late in the third period.
In the fourth quarter, the Spartans were able to get some quality minutes from Belles who battled foul trouble much of the first half. Michigan State was able to keep Maryland without a field goal for over three minutes at the end of the fourth quarter.
The Spartans will take a break and return to action on Monday, Feb. 10 against No. 21 Northwestern in Evanston, Illinois, at 9 p.m. ET on the Big Ten Network.
