MSU Women's Basketball Begins Exhibition Action Against Michigan Tech

This is the first time the teams have met in a decade.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's basketball open's the 2025-26 season with its only exhibition against Michigan Tech on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 6:30 p.m. The third season of the Robyn Fralick era begins Wednesday in the Breslin Center. MSU ended last season with a 22-10 record reaching the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Adam Nothstine and Jessica Kemnitz will be on the call for B1G+.
• Michigan Tech is a very familiar team for several Spartan assistants. Both associate head coach Kim Cameron and assistant coach Maria Kasza are both graduates of Michigan Tech. Cameron was the head coach of the Huskies for eight season.
• Last season, Michigan Tech went 12-17 overall and 9-11 in the GLIAC. The Huskies bring back leaders Kendall Standfest and Janie Tormanen. Standfest was second in scoring last year, averaging 11.7 ppg, while Tormanen was third with 11.2 ppg.
• The Spartans return a pair of all conference honorees. Senior forward Grace VanSlooten was named to the second team by both the coaches and the media. Senior guard Theryn Hallock was named honorable mention by both the coaches and the media. Michigan State will be looking to replace All-Big Ten selection Julia Ayrault, who earned second-team honors last season.
• Michigan State will have at least 13 games nationally televised on either the Big Ten Network, FS1 or Peacock. MSU will also have 12 regular-season contests aired on Big Ten Plus. Both games in the MSU-Michigan rivalry will be broadcast on FS1.
SCOUTING MICHIGAN TECH
Despite losing last season's leading scorer, first-team All-GLIAC and All-Defensive Team honoree, guard Isabella Lenz, to graduation after leading the Huskies with 14.2 points per game, Michigan Tech returns its next four leading scorers from a year ago. Sophomore guard Kendall Standfest (11.7 ppg), graduate forward/center Janie Tormanen (11.2 ppg), junior guard Alyssa Wypych (9.0 ppg) and senior forward/center Maja Kozlowska (7.5 ppg) all return from last year's MTU squad that posted a 12-17 overall record and a 9-11 GLIAC ledger in 2024-25. Overall, the Huskies return 10 of the 13 players that played last season.
Standfest and Wypych are tied for the top returning shooters behind the arc, as they both made 31 3-pointers last year, with Standfest shooting 36.0 percent (31-of-86) from distance, while Wypych made 32.0 percent (31-of-97). Standfest also led the Huskies on the glass a year ago, with 7.9 rebounds per game, while Tormanen was second at 6.3 rpg. Junior guard Dani Nuest shared team-leading honors with Lenz last year in assists, dishing out 2.6 helpers per game. Nuest was also right behind Lenz in steals a season ago, with 0.9 spg, while Lenz swiped 1.1 spg.
Sam Clayton is entering her eighth season at the reins of the Huskies' program, posting a 122-75 (.619) record at her alma mater, including three 20-win seasons, highlighted by a 25-7 mark in 2022-23, with a runner-up finish in the GLIAC Championship game to No. 1 seed Grand Valley State, advancing to the NCAA Division II Tournament, falling to Trevecca Nazarene in the first round.
FAMILIAR FACES
Associate head Kim Cameron has a long history with Michigan Tech. She is a 2005 graduate of MTU. The Alpena, Michigan native was a four-year letterwinner.
Cameron spent 13 years coaching at Michigan Tech, including eight years as head coach. During her tenure at MTU, her alma mater, Cameron became the first Division II coach in Tech history to lead the team to a national title game appearance, taking the Huskies to the championship game in 2011.
Assistant coach Maria Kasza also graduate from MTU in 2009. When Cameron was the Michigan Tech head coach, Kasza was assistant coach for five years. During that stretch, MTU made a pair of NCAA Division II Tournament appearances as well as winning a regular-season Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference championship in 2014-15.
LAST TIME AGAINST THE HUSKIES
Michigan State and Michigan Tech faced off in an exhibition to kick off the 2015-16 on Nov. 8, 2015. The Spartans came out on top 74-43. Kim Cameron was the head coach of the MTU in that game. Spartan All-American Tori Jankoska led MSU in scoring in that game with 21 points and seven rebounds.
VANSLOOTEN EARNS PRESEASON HONOR
Michigan State women's basketball senior forward Grace VanSlooten was named 2025-26 Preseason All-Big Ten by both the coaches and media. In her first season with the Spartans, VanSlooten earned second-team All-Big Ten honors. She was first on the team in scoring, averaging 15.5 points per game. She scored a career-high 480 points her junior season. She was tied for 15th in the Big Ten in rebounding, averaging 7.3 rebounds per game. In a win against, Vanderbilt at the Acrisure Classic on Nov. 27, she scored her 1,000th career point.
BRINGING HOME THE GOLD
Three players earned gold medals for their home countries this summer. Grace VanSlooten won the FIBA Women's Americup for Team USA. Marah Dykstra won gold for Canada in the FIBA 3x3 Junior Pan American Games. Inés Sotelo and Spain won a gold medal in the 2025 FIBA Eurobasket.
