Men's Tennis Returns Home For a Pair of Duals with Western Michigan, No. 25 Arizona State

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's tennis returns to the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility this weekend for a pair of duals with in-state foe Western Michigan and nationally ranked Arizona State. The Spartans will face Western Michigan on Friday, Feb. 7 at 6 p.m. before battling No. 25 Arizona State on Sunday, Feb. 9 at 12 p.m.

"This weekend will be two great opportunites for us against Western Michigan and Arizona State," said MSU men's tennis head coach Gene Orlando. "Western Michigan has turned into a great rival over the years and Arizona State is coached by Matt Hill, formally from Holt, Michigan, and will be the first time the Spartans host a school from the Pac 12 at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility."
ABOUT THE SPARTANS
Michigan State enters the weekend with a 3-3 dual record and is coming off a pair of road losses to Penn and Cornell. The Spartans have wins over Toledo (4-3), Ball State (4-2) and Niagara (7-0). The Spartans are led by sophomore Anthony Pero with a 3-2 record in singles action in the number two slot. Sophomore Carson Gates has three wins for the Spartans court three in singles action, along with junior sophomore Josh Mukherjee in flights four through six. In doubles, Mukherjee and freshman Kazuki Matsuno sit at 3-3 in the third spot and freshman duo Jarreau Campbell and Drew Keene hold two wins on court two.
ABOUT WESTERN MICHIGAN
The Broncos hold a 5-3 record on the season with wins over Butler, UIC, Gonzaga, Illinois State and Valparaiso. Western Michigan is coming off a hard-fought 4-2 loss to No. 16 Michigan in Ann Arbor on Feb. 1. Peter Kusynski and Rodrigo Crepso tallied singles wins in the loss to the Wolverines. Kennosuke Nouchi paces the Broncos with a 6-2 singles record (4-0 in flight three) and Jannik Opitz is 5-3 on the year in the first flight. The Broncos are 16-7 combined in doubles on the season and are led by Kuszynski and Jack Randall on court two with a 5-2 record.

Friday's match between Michigan State and Western Michigan will be the 94th meeting between the schools, with the Spartans holding a 60-33 edge in the all-time series. MSU leads the series at home, 39-13, with its last win over the Broncos coming at WMU on Jan. 14, 2017 (4-3).
ABOUT ARIZONA STATE
No. 25 Arizona State is coming off a 6-1 win over Northern Arizona on Feb. 1. The Sun Devils are 2-3 on the year with wins over Grand Canyon and Northern Arizona and losses to No. 8 TCU (5-2), No. 16 Tennessee (4-0), and No. 14 Oklahoma State (4-3). George Stoupe and Andrea Bolla lead the Sun Devils with 3-1 records in singles and Stoupe and Christian Lerby are 3-1 in doubles, primarily in the third flight. Sunday's match will be the first between the two programs.
