Spartan Women’s Tennis Defeats Alabama, 5-2, in Tuscaloosa

MSU battles to hand Alabama their first loss of the 2020 season.
TUSCALOOSA, Ala – Michigan State women's tennis defeated Alabama, 5-2, on Thursday evening at the Baumgardner Indoor Facility in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
Michigan State improves to 3-3 on the season and hands the Roll Tide its first loss of the 2020 season.
"Great win for our Spartan women today. The match could have gone either way but we played aggressive and tough," MSU head coach Kim Bruno said. "I always ask them to be a team that is tough to beat and that is what they were today. We will enjoy this one."
MSU started the match off by winning the doubles point, backed by wins on courts two and three. The Spartans got on the board first for the doubles point with senior Samantha Memije and sophomore Nicole Stephens shutting out Ann Selim and Ares Teixido, 6-0, on court three.The sophomore duo of Lauren Lemonds and Maja Pietrowicz dropped a 6-2 decision to Alabama's Moka Ito and Isabella Harvison at No. 1 doubles.
The doubles point was clinched on court two as junior Mary Lewis and her partner Jennifer Timotin battled to a 7-5 victory over Alba Cortina Pou and Sasha Gorchanyuk of Alabama.
Michigan State took a 1-0 lead going into singles play and looked to continue the momentum into singles. Timotin defeated Gorchanyuk, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 on court five while Stephens downed Teixido, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 on court four to give MSU the 3-0 lead.
Alabama rallied to two singles wins to get their first points of the match and narrow the Spartans lead to 3-2. Memije battled to three sets with Isabella Harvison, but fell 1-6, 7-5, 4-6 on court two. Lemonds battled but fell 6-4, 4-6, 3-6 to Cortina Pou at No. 3 singles.
The match was clinched at No. 1 singles, as Lewis rallied to a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 comeback win over Ito after dropping the first set.
With the match already clinched, Pietrowicz defeated Selim on court six in three sets, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3, to give MSU the 5-2 victory.

The Spartans return home for a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 8 at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. MSU will host Xavier at 10 a.m., before closing out the doubleheader against Montana at 2 p.m.
