
Women’s Tennis Hosts Xavier and Montana in Saturday Doubleheader

MSU will host Xavier at 10 a.m. and Montana at 2 p.m. on Saturday in a doubleheader.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State continues its three-match week in a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 8, with matches against Xavier and Montana. MSU begins the doubleheader against Xavier at 10 a.m., before concluding the day with Montana at 2 p.m. Both matches will take place at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
SCOUTING XAVIER
MSU holds a 4-0 all-time record against Xavier. In the last meeting between the two programs, the Spartans defeated the Musketeers, 5-2, in East Lansing on Feb. 1, 2019.
Xavier begins the season with a 2-3 record and has already faced two Big Ten opponents in Purdue and Indiana. The Musketeers fell to the Boilermakers on Jan. 18, 6-1, and dropped a 4-0 decision to the Hoosiers on Feb. 2.
SCOUTING MONTANA
This is the second-ever meeting between Michigan State and Montana. Last season, MSU shutout Montana, 7-0, in Missoula on Jan. 20.
Montana enters the match with MSU with a 1-3 record. Last time out, the Grizzlies defeated Grand Canyon, 5-2, for their first win of the 2020 season.
Sophomore Lauren Dunlap was named Big Sky Player of the Week on Feb. 5, after recording two victories in the Grizzlies' win over Grand Canyon.
LAST TIME OUT
Michigan State rallied to a 5-2 victory over Alabama on Thursday evening in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. MSU improved to 3-3 on the season and handed the Roll Tide their first loss of the 2020 season.
"Great win for our Spartan women today. The match could have gone either way but we played aggressive and tough," MSU head coach Kim Bruno said. "I always ask them to be a team that is tough to beat and that is what they were today. We will enjoy this one."
MSU started the match off by winning the doubles point, backed by wins on courts two and three. The Spartans got on the board first for the doubles point with senior Samantha Memije and sophomore Nicole Stephens shutting out Ann Selim and Ares Teixido, 6-0, on court three.
The doubles point was clinched on court two as junior Mary Lewis and her partner Jennifer Timotin battled to a 7-5 victory over Alba Cortina Pou and Sasha Gorchanyuk of Alabama.
Michigan State took a 1-0 lead going into singles play and looked to continue the momentum into singles. Timotin defeated Gorchanyuk, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 on court five while Stephens downed Teixido, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 on court four to give MSU the 3-0 lead.
Alabama rallied to two singles wins to get their first points of the match and narrow the Spartans lead to 3-2. Memije battled to three sets with Isabella Harvison, but fell 1-6, 7-5, 4-6 on court two. Lemonds battled but fell 6-4, 4-6, 3-6 to Cortina Pou at No. 3 singles.
The match was clinched at No. 1 singles, as Lewis rallied to a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 comeback win over Ito after dropping the first set.

The Spartans will host Gonzaga on Saturday, Feb. 15 at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility, with the match slated to begin at 3 p.m.
