Spartans Earn Run-Rule Win Over Omaha
3/1/2020 4:47:00 PM | Softball
Riverside, Calif. – Michigan State's bats finally warmed up in California, and the Spartans earned their first win of the Spring Break trip with an 11-3 in six innings over Nebraaska-Omaha, avenging a 4-2 UNO win in the Friday matchup of the teams.
The Spartans (4-12) had 13 base hits on the day – their season best – with five going for extra bases. MSU also tied its season best in runs scored (11).
MSU scored a pair of runs in the first and fourth innings thanks to some extra-base hits – a triple (Callahan) and double (Caitie Ladd) in the first, a two-run double for Meech in the fourth – to stake a 4-0 lead. The teams traded runs and pitching changes in the fifth, and after Omaha got a two-run homer from Alexa Sedlak in the top of the sixth to trim the deficit to 5-3, MSU's offense came alive in the bottom of the frame to push its lead to 7-3 before a two more errors by UNO compounded the issue and allowed MSU to run-rule the Mavs by the 11-3 score.
Freshman shortstop Camryn Wincher had a career-best three base hits and two RBI, while junior Caitie Ladd had two doubles, a single, a walk and two RBI. Mackenzie Meech also smacked two doubles and had a team-best three RBI.
Sarah Ladd started the game and went 4.1 strong innings, striking out six and surrendering just three base hits and a run to earn the win in the circle. Alli Walker earned the save, her first of the season.
Sydney Hampton got the start for UNO, and gave up four runs on seven base hits over four innings before being replaced in the fifth by Kamryn Meyer. No Omaha batter had more than one base hit, but Sedlak had two of the three RBI for the squad on the day.
