Spartans Win Second-Straight Run Rule Decision
3/1/2020 8:56:00 PM | Softball
Riverside, Calif. – Michigan State earned its second win of the day via run rule, downing host UC-Riverside by a 10-1 margin in six innings.
MSU blew open a 2-1 game with a six-run fifth inning and then tacked on two more runs in the top of the sixth to build a 10-1 lead, and then finished the game early when Sarah Ladd worked out of a bases-loaded, none-out jam in the home half of the sixth without allowing a run. The Spartans won their second game via run-rule of the day and third of the season.
Courtney Callahan and Mackenzie Meech each homered for MSU (5-12), combining for five RBI. Camryn Wincher and Callahan had two base hits for MSU, and Katie Quinlan had a bases-loaded triple that gave her three RBI. Sarah Ladd picked up the save in the circle with 2.2 innings of work, entering with a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning and striking out four while surrendering just one base hit. Starter Alli Walker allowed three hits and one run in her 3.1 innings.
The Highlanders utilized three pitchers, with starter Jacy Boles taking the loss. No UCR hitter had more than one base hit and they stranded12 runners in the game – including the bases loaded in the final frame.
The Spartans will practice in California this week, and next play a doubleheader on Thursday at Cal Baptist.
QUOTABLE
"We were solid both in the circle and in the batter's box today – these were maybe the most complete games we've played this season where we pitched well and got big and timely hits up and down our lineup. Everyone contributed today, and it was nice that we were rewarded with a pair of victories. We'll take tomorrow off and be able to get a couple of practices in midweek before we play again Thursday – and the ability to practice outdoors will go a long way for us in terms of development. It's nice to go into our week in California with a good feeling about the direction we're headed."

- Courtney Callahan and Camryn Wincher each had two base hits, each going 2-for-4. Callahan had her first career homer.
- McKenzie Meech had a two-run homer and three RBI total on the day.
- Sarah Ladd pitched 2.2 relief innings, surrendering one base hit and striking out four, working out of a none-out bases-loaded jam in the sixth inning.
STATS AND STORYLINES
- Courtney Callahan was the leadoff batter for the visiting Spartans and launched a homer over the wall in right field. It was her first career round-tripper, and she had a triple in the first game of the day.
- In the top of the third, Caitie Ladd started things off with a one-out single, and pitcher Jacy Boles walked the next two batters to load the bases. UCR went to the bullpen to bring in Megan Casper to replace Boles, and the first batter she faced was the freshman Camryn Wincher, who singled through the left side to bring home Ladd from third.
- In the home half of the third, a leadoff single and an error put a pair of runners on for the Highlanders, and a Nadia Witt sac fly to center brought home a run to trim the Spartan lead to 2-1.
- The home team looked to tie the game up in the bottom of the fourth. Walker surrendered a walk and a base hit, and then Sarah Ladd came out of the bullpen. She got the first batter she faced to go down swinging, surrendered a base hit to left, but got Danielle Ortega to pop out for the third out of the inning.
- The Spartans blew the game open with a xx-run inning in the top of the fifth. MSU loaded the bases on a one-out walk to Shae Schreckengost (her third free pass of the game) and back-to-back singles by Joanna Bartz and Camryn Wincher. A fielding error by the third baseman allowed Meech to reach base and both Bartz and Schreckengost to score to push the MSU lead out to 4-1. Casper walked Brooke Snyder to re-load the bases, and Katie Quinlan un-loaded them with a triple down the left field line. Courtney Callahan singled up the middle to bring home Quinlan for an 8-1 lead,; that spelled the end of the outing for Casper, who was replaced in the circle by Caitlyn Rivera, who got the home team out of the inning.
- The home team would not go down without a fight, putting a pair of runners on with a walk and an error with no outs in the bottom of the sixth, and both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. A second walk loaded the bases, but Sarah Ladd dug in and retired the next three batters on a popup, a strikeout, and a ground ball to end the game.
- Alli Walker started the game and went 3.1 innings, allowing three base hits and a run. Sarah Ladd came in from the bullpen and tossed the remainder of the game, surrendering just one hit in 2.2 innings, striking out four.
- Camryn Wincher had her third consecutive multiple-hit game, with a pair of base hits. She has a hit in six of the last seven MSU games.
- Joanna Bartz has reached base in 10 consecutive games, the longest current streak for MSU. She now owns the team's longest active hitting streak at four games.
- Shae Schreckengost drew walks in her first three plate appearances, a career best for walks in a game and the second-highest single-game total in program history. The school record for free passes in a game is four, which has been done six times.
