Spartans Stung In Extra Innings, 3-2
3/5/2020 10:25:00 PM | Softball
Riverside, Calif. – A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning gave California Baptist a 3-2 victory over Michigan State in the first game of a doubleheader in Riverside, Calif. on Thursday night.
With the teams playing the international tiebreaker rule (a runner placed on second base to start the eighth inning), a sac bunt sent the winning run to third, and Abby Robertson's sac fly brought home the winning score. The home team had rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, when a leadoff batter Caitlyn Lloyd was hit by a pitch, stole second, and came home on a wild pitch.
The game was tight throughout, and was a duel between the senior Kerisa Verimontes of CBU (8-13) and the freshman Sarah Ladd from MSU. Verimontes retired the first 15 batters she saw, but Sarah Ladd was up to the task, bending first but refusing to break. California Baptist had its first three base hits in the bottom of the third inning to break open a scoreless game and take a 1-0 lead, and MSU countered with a pair of runs on three base hits in the top of the sixth. MSU made a pitching change in the seventh after Ladd hit Lloyd to lead off the inning, and Alli Walker got a sac bunt and strikeout for the first two outs of the inning. She went up 0-2 in the count on pinch hitter Juju Dorado before a wild pitch allowed Lloyd to score from third. Walker took the loss in 1.2 innings pitched, striking out two without allowing a base hit.
Katie Quinlan, Kennedy Wyllie, and Courtney Callahan had the three base hits for the Spartans (5-13) in the sixth inning to take the lead, and Joanna Bartz added a leadoff single in the seventh as MSU tried to manufacture an insurance run.
The Spartans finish off the doubleheader with the Lancers, then have a pair of games against CSU-Bakersfield and UC-Riverside on tap for Friday.

STATS AND STORYLINES
- The host school got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning. Sarah Ladd had faced the minimum number of batters through two outs in the frame, but Makenna Stram broke that up with a single to right, stole second, and came around to score on a Brittany Galvez single into left field.
- The Spartans finally broke through with a base hit in the top of the sixth inning, after Viramontes had retired 15 straight batters. Katie Quinlan led off the inning with a single to right, and freshman Kennedy Wyllie stepped in with a double to right center that brought the speedy Quinlan to tie the game at 1-1. Pinch runner Laney Joyner went to third on a passed ball, and one out later Courtney Callahan brought Joyner home on a single to left center.
- Caitlyn Lloyd led off the bottom of the seventh, fought out to a full count, and then was hit by a pitch to put the tying run on base. MSU went to Alli Walker in the circle to close it out; Lloyd greeted her with a steal of second base, and then she went to third on a sac bunt by Amanda Argomaniz. Walker got a big strikeout for the second out of the inning, and had two strikes on the pinch hitter Juju Dorado – but a wild pitch scored the game-tying run. Walker got Dorado to go down swinging, but the Lancers had new life as the teams headed to extra innings.
- With the teams playing the international tiebreaker, pinch runner Abby Joseph made it to third on a ground out by Katie Quinlan, but a great stab by Brittany Galvez robbed Erica Holt of a base hit and stranded the runner to end the inning.
- A leadoff sac bunt by Stram sent the runner to third to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning, and Galvez was intentionally walked to put runners at the corners. Abby Robertson came to the plate and her sac fly scored the winning run.
- Sarah Ladd went six full innings, scattering five base hits and was charged with two runs after leaving in the bottom of the seventh with one on and none out.
