Sixth-Inning CBU Rally Sinks MSU
3/6/2020 1:01:00 AM | Softball
Riverside, Calif – A seven-run rally in the sixth inning pushed California Baptist to a 9-4 victory over Michigan State in the nightcap of the doubleheader between the teams.
Following a similar script to the first game of the day, the home team took an early 2-0 lead and MSU rallied in the top of the sixth inning. Trailing 3-2 entering the home half of the frame, the Lancers put seven runs on the board in that half-inning, aided by a pair of Spartan throwing errors. In the first game of the day, MSU allowed the tying run in the bottom of the seventh inning on a wild pitch before losing in extra innings, 3-2.
MSU's pitchers combined for six walks, and a pair of errors for the Spartans led to seven of the nine runs scored by the Lancers going unearned. Alli Walker started the game and went 3.1 innings before being lifted in favor of Sarah Ladd, who gave up the big sixth inning rally (with just one earned run against). CBU out-hit the Spartans 11-4 in the game, stranding eight runners/
CBU took a 2-0 lead with single runs in the third and fourth innings, taking advantage of a sac fly in the third and a trio of free passes in the fourth frame.
As it did in the first game between the teams earlier in the day, MSU came from behind in the sixth inning, rallying for three runs – an error and a hit batter set up Caitie Ladd for a two-run double, and Joanna Bartz followed with an RBI single to make it a 3-2 ballgame. CBU came right back to tie it, then put the game out of reach in the home half of the sixth, answering the Spartan rally in the top of the frame with a seven-run outburst. Kennedy Wyllie hit her first collegiate homer in the top of the seventh inning to trim the deficit to 9-4.
Caitlyn Lloyd went 3-for-3 for the home team, with Molly Kolander and Brittany Galvez each posting a pair of base hits. Amanda Argomaniz hit a three- run homer in the sixth inning to lead her team in RBI. Giana Lopez went 5.2 innings, allowing MSU's first three runs before being relieved by game one winner Kerisa Viramontes, who went the final 1.1 innings and surrendered only the Wyllie homer.
The Spartans have a pair of games against CSU-Bakersfield and UC-Riverside on tap for Friday, with the first game starting at 2:30 pm ET.
