Riverside, Calif – Michigan State snapped a two-game skid with a 6-2 victory over CSU-Bakersfield at UC-Riverside on Friday afternoon.
The Spartans put runs on the board in three of the first four innings and had runners in each of the four frames, and used small ball effectively to generate offense while Alli Walker kept the Roadrunners off the board until the seventh inning. Sarah Ladd came on in the seventh to close it out, retiring three straight batters after CSU-Bakersfield rallied for a pair of runs on three base hits.
Courtney Callahan went 3-for-3 with a double, while Caitie Ladd had a triple, two RBI and a pair of sacrifice hits.
Samantha Martinez had a pair of base hits for the Roadrunners (1-10), while Karah Wiseman (triple) and Sam Fontaine (double) had extra-base hits in the CSU-B rally in the seventh inning.
The Spartans finish off today's twinbill with a game against host UC-Riverside later today.

STATS AND STORYLINES
- The Spartans looked to start the game fast and got just that as Courtney Callahan reached on a leadoff single and Caitie Ladd brought her home on a triple down the left field line. Ladd scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.
- MSU continued to produce offense in the second, as Camryn Wincher led off the inning with a walk, Katie Quinlan legged out a bunt single, and Shae Schreckengost brought them home with a single up the middle, but was out at second trying to stretch it into a double. With two outs, Callahan picked up her second base hit of the day, and pitcher Daryn Hitzel walked both Caitie Ladd and Mackenzie Meech to load the bases. Hitzel worked her way out of the jam to keep the Spartans from building further.
- After a pair of third-inning walks, the Roadrunners went to the bullpen to bring on Talia Nielson. Starter Daryn Hitzel went 2.2 innings, issuing five walks and allowing five hits and four runs. Nielson got the final out of the inning to strand a pair of runners.
- Calllahan led off the fourth for MSU with her third base hit of the day, a double to left. She went to third on a sac bunt by Caitie Ladd and came home on a sac fly from Meech.
- MSU tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, as Schreckengost reached on an error and Abby Joseph followed with a bunt single that moved pinch runner Laney Joyner to second. A sac bunt by Callahan and a sac fly by Caitie Ladd brought home Joyner for the 6-0 MSU advantage.
- The Roadrunners broke up the shutout in the top of the seventh when they led off the inning with a triple by Karah Wiseman and a double by Sam Fontaine, and pinch hitter Katie Jackson singled to bring home Fontaine to make it 6-2. Sarah Ladd relieved Walker in the circle, and a pair of strikeouts around a groundout to seal the Spartan win.
- Walker went 6.0 innings, striking out three and surrendering two runs on seven hits.
