Southern Utah Stymies Spartans With Late Rallies
3/7/2020 7:43:00 PM | Softball
The Spartans (6-16) started off with a 4-0 advantage thanks to a pair of homers from Joanna Bartz and Caitie Ladd along with a base hit by Camryn Wincher, and then plated a single run in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead The Thunderbirds manufactured a pair of runs to trim the deficit to 5-2 in the top of the fifth, but Michigan State countered with a three-run outburst on doubles by freshmen Kennedy Wyllie and Cam Wincher to pull ahead 8-2 with the bases loaded and just one out. SUU freshman relief pitcher Grace Owen came back with a pair of big strikeouts to keep the Spartans from a chance at a run-rule win and keep the game going.
Given new life, the Thunderbirds rallied for seven runs in the top of the sixth and six more in the seventh inning for the final margin. SUU came up with three homers and seven total extra-base hits in those final two innings.
The Spartans head to Oxford, Ohio next weekend for a three-game series against Miami.

STATS AND STORYLINES
- Michigan State had hot bats early, getting a pair of home runs from Caitie Ladd and Joanna Bartz to jump out to a 3-0 lead in the first. A walk, stolen base, and an error allowed Katie Quinlan to be stationed at third, where Camryn Wincher knocked her in with an RBI single.
- Shae Schreckengost led off the home half of the fourth with a single, and Erica Holt reached on an error that moved pinch runner Brooke Snyder to third. Snyder came home on a ground ball by Caitie Ladd, her second RBI of the day.
- Southern Utah got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth. Hannah Pace worked a 11-pitch at bat to earn a free pass, but Sarah Ladd got the next two batters. Samantha Guerra and MacKenzie Whitten smacked back-to-back doubles to put a pair of runs on the baord
- The Spartans countered immediately, as Bartz singled to lead off the home half of the fifth and came around to score on a double by Kennedy Wyllie. Wyllie went to third on a throwing error, bringing pinch hitter Laney Joyner to the plate. Joyner singled to bring home Wyllie to push the Spartan lead back out to five, and Wincher smacked a double to score Joyner to push the MSU lead out to 8-2. Southern Utah went to its bullpen to bring on freshman Grace Owen to face Schreckengost with one on and none out – she walked the catcher to put two on and then after a strikeout, allowed a single to Courtney Callahan to load the bases. Owen recovered to strike out the next two batters to limit the damage.
- With new life, Southern Utah put together a rally in the top of the sixth – SUU started off with a double and pair of singles to lead the bases with one out; Sarah Ladd walked the next batter to bring home a run, and then gave up a double to plate two more to bring the Thunderbirds within three, 8-5. Alli Walker re-entered in the circle and got a popup for the second out of the inning, but a grand slam pushed the Thunderbirds ahead, 9-8.
- SUU rallied again for six runs in the top of the seventh to take a 15-8 lead. It started off with a pair of on-out singles and a walk, and a hit batter brought home the first run of the inning. With two outs, a wild pitch scored a second run, and a three-run homer by Whitten made it a six-run lead. Mikelle Magalogo capped the scoring with a solo homer.
- In the bottom of the seventh, MSU put the first two batters on via walk, and a fielder's choice and sac fly brought home Erica Holt from third to make it 15-9.
- Joanna Bartz hit her second home run in as many days. Caitie Ladd hit her second homer of the season as well.
- Kennedy Wyllie picked up her second two-hit game of the season, while Wincher (2-for-3) had her fourth multi-hit game of the spring break trop.
- Courtney Callahan extended her hitting streak to seven straight games, tying the longest streak of the season for the Spartans. She has reached base in nine consecutive games.
