Spartan Gymnastics Celebrates Senior Day With Dominating Win Over Eastern Michigan

Senior Ella Douglas earns two event titles in her final home meet.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Senior Ella Douglas celebrated Senior Day with a pair of 9.925 scores, en route to capturing two event titles Saturday at Jenison Fieldhouse. The Spartans took care of business at home as well, defeating Eastern Michigan 195.875-194.200.
"All in all, with it being Senior Day and bittersweet because it's Ella's last time in Jenison Field House," MSU head coach Mike Rowe said. "She's been a determining factor in helping elevate our program since the day she walked in here. Her accolades academically and athletically are off the charts. I can't speak more highly of her and it is bittersweet that we're losing her but she's going to be hugely successful in her medical career. Very proud of her; it was an emotional evening but we're just happy that we were fortunate enough to have her here."
Michigan State scored a 48.825 on vault, 48.775 on bars, 49.000 on beam and 49.275 on floor for its final winning score of 195.875. Eastern Michigan scored a 48.475 on vault, 48.200 on bars, 48.650 on beam and 48.875 on floor for a total of 194.200.
Douglas earned event titles on both the beam and the floor in her final home meet. Junior Lea Mitchell and freshman Nyah Smith tied for the all-around title with a total of 39.150. This was Smith's first career all-around win, while Mitchell captured her seventh all-around title of the season.
The Spartans started the meet on vault earning a 48.825, edging the Eagles who captured a score of 48.472. Smith earned her third vault title of the season with a score of 9.850, which was her second-best score of the season. Mitchell finished second with a 9.800, while sophomore Ashley Hofelich tied for third with a score of 9.750.
Michigan State finished first on bars with a score of 48.775, compared to 48.200 by Eastern Michigan. The Spartans rebounded nicely after scoring a 47.900 on bars last week at Iowa State. Freshman Jori Jackard took her fourth event title on bars with a 9.850. This is the seventh time this season she has earned a score of 9.850 or higher. Smith finished tied for third with a mark of 9.750.
On beam, the Spartans finished first with a score of 49.000, while EMU ended with a 48.650. This was the fifth time this season that MSU eclipsed the 49.000 mark on beam. Douglas won her first event crown of the day with a stellar 9.925 on beam. She has now captured five beam titles this season. Mitchell was third with a mark of 9.850. Freshman Chloe Bellmore tied for fourth with a score of 9.775.
MSU finished action on floor with its second-best score of the season with a 49.275. Michigan State's season best was a 49.475 against Nebraska on Jan. 26. In a stunning final routine at home in the anchor position, Douglas won on floor with a career-best tying score of 9.925. Bellmore recorded a personal best with a 9.850 to finish tied for second along with Hofelich and Smith, who also tied her career-high. This was the second-straight week that Smith reached this score.
The Spartans will close out the regular season with a tri-meet against Kent State and Eastern Michigan on Friday, March 13 at 7 p.m. in Kent, Ohio.
