
MSU Gymnastics Has 12 Scholastic All-America Award Winners

Spartans tie program-record with 12, matching 2008; One of 74 programs in country with better than a 3.0 cumulative team GPA
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- A total of 12 members of the 2020 Michigan State gymnastics team have been named WCGA Scholastic All-America Award winners by the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) as announced on Tuesday, August 11.
Ashley Beatty, Chloe Bellmore, Tristan Brown, Gabriella Douglas, Sydney Ewing, Ashley Hofelich, Jori Jackard, Madison McHale, Lea Mitchell, Alaina Raybon, Jenna Wicker and Alyssa Wiedeman were all recognized for having a GPA of 3.5 or higher during the 2019-20 academic year.
The 12 Spartan Scholastic All-America Award winners tie the 2008 season for the most in program history.
Additionally, Michigan State was recognized with the WCGA Team Academic award, for being one of 74 gymnastics programs in the country with a cumulative team GPA of 3.0 or better, as the Spartans logged a 3.3587. Additionally, with 75 percent of student-athletes with a 3.5 or better, MSU was one of 31 programs in the nation with 75 percent or better.Â
Lea Mitchell and Sidney Ewing were two of WCGA's record number of student-athletes – 193 (14.23%) recorded a 4.0 GPA, which is an increase from 8.91% from 2019. Additionally, Gabriella Douglas becomes a four-time WCGA Scholastic All-America Award recipient, just the 12th in school history.
Beatty, a junior from Macomb Township, Mich., had a 3.80 GPA as a physiology major. She is now a three-time WCGA Scholastic All-America Award winner, as well as also earning Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and Academic All-Big Ten accolades this season.
Bellmore had a 3.46 GPA majoring in business. The freshman from DeWitt, Mich., earned her first WCGA Scholastic All-America Award.
Brown, also a DeWitt, Michigan native, had a 3.58 GPA as a child development major. Now a two-time WCGA Scholastic All-America Award honoree, the junior also earned Academic All-Big Ten accolades.Â
Douglas, a Toronto, Canada native, finished up her senior season with a 3.84 GPA in kinesiology. She becomes the 12th four-time WCGA Scholastic All-America Award winner in school history. Douglas also received the MSU Athletics Chester Brewer Leadership Award and was also the MSU Athletics recipient of the Big Ten Medal of Honor. She also earned Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and Academic All-Big Ten honors for her final season of eligibility in 2019-20.
Ewing, a native of Frisco, Texas, posted a 4.0 GPA majoring in advertising. The sophomore earned WCGA Scholastic All-America Award accolades for the second-straight season, along with Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and Academic All-Big Ten recognition.
Hofelich notched a 3.56 GPA as a business major. The sophomore from Novi, Mich., garnered WCGA Scholastic All-America Award honors for the second year in a row. Hofelich was also an Academic All-Big Ten selection.
Jackard is a native of Haslett, Mich., and had a 3.48 GPA majoring in psychology. The freshman collected her first WCGA Scholastic All-America Award.Â
McHale, a native of Naperville, Ill., logged a 3.88 GPA as a hospitality business major. Now a three-time WCGA Scholastic All-America Award recipient, McHale also added to her junior season honors with Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and Academic All-Big Ten recognition.
Mitchell posted a 4.00 GPA majoring in journalism. The Boynton Beach, Fla., native also earned WCGA Scholastic All-America Award recognition for the third-straight season. The junior also collected both Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and Academic All-Big Ten accolades.
Raybon, a Mount Pleasant, S.C., native, had a 3.88 GPA as a journalism major. Earning WCGA Scholastic All-America Award honors for the first time, also ended her sophomore season with Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and Academic All-Big Ten honors.
Wicker, a native of Allen, Texas, posted a 3.61 GPA majoring in business. The sophomore collected her second WCGA Scholastic All-America Award in as many seasons. She was also an Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
Wiedeman is a native of Springboro, Ohio, and logged a 3.62 GPA as a dietetics major. She earned WCGA Scholastic All-America Award honors for the second year in a row. Wiedeman finished her sophomore season with Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and Academic All-Big Ten accolades.
