EAST LANSING – Ohio State broke a 1-1 tie with four goals in the third period and topped the Michigan State hockey team, 5-1, on Saturday at Munn Ice Arena. Jagger Joshua scored for MSU, while Drew DeRidder made 51 saves.
"It was a bit of a tough one there," MSU head coach Danton Cole said. "There are certain things that we as a team - and most teams - have to hang their hat on and one of them is working hard and another is winning some battles. If you do those things, usually you get a little confidence and I think we muddled around a bit."
Joshua gave the Spartans (5-8-2, 4-8-1-2-1-0 B1G) a 1-0 lead 3:59 into the second period. He took the puck off the end boards and from just off the crease on the right side and snuck a shot in on the short side past OSU goaltender Tommy Nappier. Dennis Cesana and Christian Krygier both picked up assists on the goal, which was Joshua's third of the year.
Ohio State (5-9-1, 5-8-0-0-1-0) made it a 1-1 game with 9:01 to play in the second period on a goal by Travis Treloar from low in the left circle.
MSU's Mitchell Lewandowski had a chance to give MSU the lead early in the third, but Nappier turned away his quick attempt from between the circles. The Buckeyes then took control of the game with three goals in a span of 2:05.
CJ Regula got the first of OSU's four third-period goals at the 3:27 mark, scoring off the rush with a snap shot from the right circle.
Take Singleton made it 3-1 40 seconds later with a shot from the right circle. Then at the 5:32 mark, Patrick Guzzo got open in the low slot, took a pass from Ryan O'Connell and slipped the puck into the net.
Collin Peters capped the scoring with 4:53 to play, making the final score 5-1.
"We got a 1-0 lead and I thought we found a little life after that and did some decent things – we worked and got a little energy," Cole said. "Then a bad bounce off a linesman, we don't finish our backcheck – which was kind of a theme of the night – and it ends up going from a 1-1 game to 4-1 really quickly. One of the things we're normally fairly good at is reading things off the rush and covering our 3-on-3's and something you hang your hat on, but we didn't do a very good job and kind of hung Drew out to dry.
"Bottom line, I don't think we worked hard enough, didn't deserve to win and that's what happened."
The Spartans never had a chance on the man-advantage on Saturday, while MSU erased both of OSU's power plays.
The Spartans and Buckeyes will complete their season series on Sunday at 4 p.m. at Munn.
