MADISON, Wisconsin – No. 13 Wisconsin scored three goals in the opening period and went on to defeat the Michigan State hockey team, 6-0, on Friday night at LaBahn Arena in the first of a two-game series between the teams.
"Overall, we had some guys going, but not nearly enough," said MSU head coach Danton Cole. "We're a team that we need everybody jumping and everybody winning battles and when you don't, and our gaps are off and there is too much room in the neutral ice both offensively and defensively, you're going to run into trouble against a team like Wisconsin. We deserved what we got and we have to be better."
An early power play gave the Badgers (10-7, 8-5-0-0-1-0) an opportunity and they took advantage as Cole Caufield got the puck in the right circle and snapped shot past goaltender Drew DeRidder at the 54-second mark.
Wisconsin made it 2-0 2:30 later when Brock Caufield got the puck behind the MSU (6-9-2, 5-9-1-2-1-0) net and was able to bank it in off DeRidder.
The Badgers extended their lead to 3-0 with 5:42 to go in the opening period. Dylan Halloway got his stick on a loose puck at the top of the crease and was able to flip it into the net, past a sprawled DeRidder, who had gotten knocked to the ice. The Spartans challenged the goal for goaltender interference, but the officials reviewed the play and the call stood.
The Spartans' best chance of the opening period came when they were trailing to 2-0. Kristof Papp set up a wide-open Brody Stevens off the rush with nothing between him and goaltender Robbie Beydoun, but the puck hit a rut, and bounced away before Stevens could get off a shot.
Cole Caufield got his second of the game with 5:50 to go in the second period. Ty Pelton-Byce was able to gain the MSU zone, put a shot toward the net and puck got over to Caufield on the left side of the crease, where he was able to put it in.
A power-play goal by Pelton-Byce with 1:31 to go in the second period made it a 5-0 game.
Holloway got his second of the game with 11:15 to go in the third to cap the scoring.
Pierce Charleson took over for DeRidder in the third period and made 15 saves. DeRidder stopped 29 of the 34 shots he faced through two periods.
The Spartans and Badgers meet again on Saturday at 4 p.m. ET.
