MSU win its first Big Ten game of the season
Piscataway, N.J. - Sophomore midfielder Jack Zugay provided the golden goal in the 107th minute as the Spartan men's soccer team downed No. 22 Rutgers, 2-1, in double overtime at a rainy Yurcak Field on Sunday afternoon.
The win halted a three-match winless streak and gave Michigan State is first Big Ten win. The Spartans improve to 5-5-2 overall this season and 1-2-2 in league play, giving MSU three much-needed points in the Big Ten standings. Rutgers falls to 7-3-2 overall and 1-3-1 in Big Ten action.
The game-winning goal began with a beautiful pass by junior forward Gianni Ferri that went behind the Scarlet Knight defenders. Zugay's upper 90 blast was just out of reach of Rutgers' stellar goalkeeper Oren Asher. The goal was just the second career goal for Zugay, both of which were game winners. Zugay also gave MSU the win against Wisconsin last season.
The first half was very balanced, but it was the Spartans that took the first lead of the game. Senior midfielder Louis Sala began the sequence on the left side. He dished the ball to redshirt-junior defender Will Perkins, who's cross bent past a diving Asher and into the goal to put MSU up, 1-0.
Rutgers scored the equalizer in the 52nd minute off a corner kick. The Matthew Acosta corner kick perfectly found the head of Cole Sotack to tie the game at 1-1.
The Spartans continued to be the aggressor in the rest of the second half, but were unable to find break the tie.
In the first overtime, the teams traded blows. Michigan State was able to get shots from senior midfielder Jack Beck, Mutatu and Ferri.
The second overtime was fairly quiet until Zugay found the game winner. The junior's goal was only the second of the period for MSU.
For the game, the Spartans edged the Scarlet Knights in shots, 20-19, while RU had the edge in corner kicks, 7-6.
Michigan State will conclude its three-game road trip at Western Michigan on Wednesday, Oct. 13 at 4:30 p.m. The game against the Broncos will be the final non-conference game of the season for the Spartans.
