KALAMAZOO, Mich. - In its non-conference finale, the Michigan State men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Western Michigan Wednesday afternoon in Kalamazoo.
"It was more than just back-to-back overtime games. Our guys like Farai (Mutatu), Jack Beck and Michael Miller have logged a lot of minutes this season. Western Michigan didn't have a game for seven games," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. "They looked fresher out there, and we had a lot of heavy legs out there. In order to create chances, you need to have fresh legs. We also really needed more out of our bench. But at the end of day, we have no excuses. We need to find a way to win games."
With the loss, the Spartans fall to 5-6-2 overall, while Western Michigan improves to 4-4-4 overall. With another Big Ten game looming on Sunday, the Spartans played 18 different players. Michigan State is coming off of back-to-back double overtime games.
The Spartans were shut out for only the fourth time this season.
The Broncos came out fast in the first half. In the fifth minute, Dylan Sing had the first shot of the game that was stopped by the Spartan backline. Western Michigan was not to be denied with Charlie Sharp scoring the first goal of the game in the 12th minute.
After the goal, neither team was very active on the offensive front. After the first 45 minutes of action, the Broncos out-shot the Spartans 3-2.
Western Michigan increased its lead to 2-0 in the 55th minute. Brennan Creek gave the Broncos the two-goal lead after passes from Mike Melaragni and Gavin Wigg.
The Spartans were never able to get the offense going and were out-shot for the game, 8-3.
"Now we just have to recover and get back to Big Ten games. Sunday is Senior Day and these guys have given a lot to this program. We need to honor them and put forth an effort that they would be proud of," Rensing said.
Michigan State will now return to DeMartin Stadium for its final two regular-season home games of the season. The Spartans will celebrate Senior Day on Sunday, Oct. 17 against Ohio State at 2 p.m. MSU will then host No. 12 Maryland on Friday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m.
