KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Michigan State men's tennis team wrapped up competition at the WMU Vredevelt Invite on Sunday afternoon in Kalamazoo.
The Spartans picked up two doubles wins, going undefeated in the tournament in doubles action. Reed Crocker picked up his second win of the invite in singles play.
"It was a bittersweet weekend for the Spartans," head coach Gene Orlando said. "We went undefeated in doubles action but struggled all weekend in singles. We have work to do and we have two weeks to prepare before we host the 2021 ITA Regionals. We will be ready!"
In the second round of singles action, Crocker defeated his opponent from Chicago State, 6-1, 6-2, surrendering just three points over two sets to Sanchez. Jack Winkler fell to Chicago State's Zamorski in a hard-fought battle. Coming back from a 3-6 loss in the first set, Winkler took the second set 6-4 to force a third before eventually losing 10-3.
The doubles team of Nick Williams and Jarreau Campbell played a near perfect match against Zamorski and Sandoval also of Chicago State, winning 6-1. Winkler and Crocker fought hard for their win against host team Western Michigan's Lohse and Schlueter, picking up a 6-4 victory.
The Spartans head into a two-week hiatus before hosting the 2021 ITA Midwest Regionals. The tournament runs from Thursday, Oct. 21 until Monday, Oct. 25 on the campus of Michigan State University.
