Spartan Soccer Celebrates Senior Day Against OSU Sunday

EAST LANSNG, Mich. - Michigan State men's soccer will celebrate Senior Day against Ohio State on Sunday, Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. at DeMartin Stadium. The Spartans will celebrate Connor Brazil, Jack Beck, Brandon DeSmyter, Michael Miller, Luke Morrell, Dante Morrissette, Hunter Morse, Farai Mutatu, Olu Ogunwale, Will Perkins and Louis Sala.
Michigan State stands 5-6-2 overall and 1-2-2 in Big Ten contests. On Wednesday, the Spartans fell to Western Michigan on the road, 2-0. The Buckeyes are 4-7-1 this season and 0-4-0 in league play. Last time out, OSU fell to Indiana, 3-0.
RISING THE RANKS
After a win against No. 22 Rutgers, the Spartans now have the third-toughest strength of schedule in the nation behind defending national champion Marshall and Creighton. Michigan is second in the Big Ten in strength of schedule, standing No. 13. MSU also has the third-best RPI in the league (No. 28), behind Maryland (No. 16) and Penn State (No. 22).
QUITE THE COMBO
Seniors Farai Mutatu and Jack Beck have been quite the scoring combination this season. The six goals scored by Mutatu are the most by a Spartan since Ryan Sierakowski scored eight in 2018. Beck's seven assists are the most by an MSU player since All-American Giuseppe Barone had 10 helpers in 2018.
EFFICIENCY AT ITS BEST
Sophomore midfielder Jack Zugay has been incredibly efficient in his scoring during his two seasons at MSU. His game-winning goal against Rutgers on Oct. 10 was his second career goal. It was also his second game-winning goal as he also netted the game winner against Wisconsin last season.
GETTING IN THE GAME
Five Spartans have started all 13 games this season, including Farai Mutatu, Jack Beck, Michael Miller, Will Perkins and Nick Stone. Perkins and Stone lead the way in minutes played with 1,180 and 1,216, respectively. Twenty-one different Spartans have started at least one game.
THE BEST AROUND
Senior forward Farai Mutatu remains alone in first in the league in goals with six. He added to his goal count with the Spartans first goal of the game against Michigan on Oct. 5. The six goals was the most by a Spartan since Ryan Sierakowski scored eight in 2018.
Senior midfielder Jack Beck continues to have stellar season for the Spartans. With an assist against Michigan on Oct. 5, Beck maintains his hold on first place in the league with seven assists. Six different players are tied for second with four.
As a team, Michigan State is fourth in the conference in points with 53, including 17 goals and 19 assists.
LOOKING AT THE BUCKEYES
Overall, Michigan State leads the series lead over Ohio State, 28-23-3, including 13-9-2 at DeMartin Stadium. During the atypical COVID-19 2021 season, the teams played twice. The Spartans earned a 1-0 win in Columbus, while the Buckeyes won at Lansing Catholic High School, 2-0. Michigan State has won five of the last seven meetings against Ohio State.
The Buckeyes are Ohio State are 4-7-1 overall this season and 0-4-0 in Big Ten action. Laurence Wootton is tied for fifth in the league in goals scored with four. Xavier Green also adds two game-winning goals for OSU.
OSU returned 12 players with points from the 2021 Spring season, including all eight goal scorers. Wootton and Parker Grinstead led the Buckeyes offensively last spring and both were members of the Big Ten All-Freshman team.
LOCAL KIDS DO GOOD
MSU's win against Notre Dame showcased two players from near East Lansing. Seniors Farai Mutatu (Haslett) and Jack Beck (DeWitt) scored all four goals for MSU with Mutatu scoring three and Beck adding one. Beck also added assists on Mutatu's final two goals.
Mutatu's hat trick was the first by a Spartan since Jay Chapman against No. 16 Indiana on Oct. 28, 2012. Senior midfielder Jack Beck also added a goal and two assists in the win.
LAST TIME OUT
n its non-conference finale, the Michigan State men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Western Michigan Wednesday afternoon in Kalamazoo.
"It was more than just back-to-back overtime games. Our guys like Farai (Mutatu), Jack Beck and Michael Miller have logged a lot of minutes this season. Western Michigan didn't have a game for seven games," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. "They looked fresher out there, and we had a lot of heavy legs out there. In order to create chances, you need to have fresh legs. We also really needed more out of our bench. But at the end of day, we have no excuses. We need to find a way to win games."
With the loss, the Spartans fall to 5-6-2 overall, while Western Michigan improves to 4-4-4 overall. With another Big Ten game looming on Sunday, the Spartans played 18 different players. Michigan State is coming off of back-to-back double overtime games.
