Bloomington, Ind. – Scoring at least one goal in every period, Indiana defeated Michigan State, 5-0, in Big Ten field hockey action Friday afternoon at the IU Field Hockey Complex in Bloomington, Ind.
The Hooisers moved to 8-7 overall with the win, sitting at 2-4 in the conference. For the Spartans, they shifted to 7-4 on the season, holding 0-4 record in league play. The game saw IU take the shot advantage, 30-6, and the edge in penalty corners, 9-3.
Anna Gwiazdzinski opened the scoring for IU in the ninth minute, as she deflected in a high shot off a penalty corner.
Indiana extended the lead at the 27:39 mark, as Kira Curland put in her own rebound to the left side of MSU senior goalkeeper Jade Arundell.
55 seconds into the second half, Hailey Couch made it 3-0 when she tapped in a Kayla Kiwak pass after Kiwak carried the ball near the end line and snuck the ball towards the front.
Meghan Dillon cut across at the top of the circle to fire a shot in the 53rd minute, finding the back of the net for another Hoosier tally.
The 54th minute featured the last Indiana goal, as Peyton Becker put a shot to the bottom corner on an assist from Dillon.
A season-high 13 saves from Arundell did not prevent her from suffering the loss, while fellow senior Monique Jardell played the final six minutes. The Indiana keeper, Arabella Loveridge, made three saves to get the winning decision.
Freshman Ellie Rutherford recorded two shots on the offensive end, one of three Spartans to register a shot on goal.
Michigan State continues its road trip on Sunday, playing a 1 p.m. contest at Northwestern.
