
Women's Soccer Drops 1-0 Match at Rutgers

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State women's soccer lost a 1-0 battle on the road to Rutgers on Sunday afternoon. The Spartans played the Scarlet Knights in Piscataway, New Jersey for their final regular-season road game.
Michigan State moves to 9-3-3 overall and 4-3-1 in conference play with two final regular-season matches on the horizon. Rutgers keeps a perfect 8-0 record in the Big Ten and is 12-2 overall.
Rutgers came out firing in the first half, outshooting the Spartans 10-1. The Michigan State defense held strong throughout the half, leading to a 0-0 draw at the end of the frame. Lauren Kozal made three saves in the first 45, and the Spartans earned one corner kick while Rutgers had two.
The Scarlet Knights finally capitalized in the 61st minute with a shot from the box that bounced off a Michigan State defender and ricocheted into the back of the net.
Kozal kept the net guarded for the Green & White in the final 30 minutes, despite several last-minute chances from Rutgers. The home team outshot MSU 33-4 overall. Kozal collected nine saves, just one short of her season-high.
The Spartans are back at home for their last two regular-season games of the year. They start out hosting Maryland on Thursday, Oct. 21 for a 6 p.m. game airing on the Big Ten Network.
