
Women's Soccer Shuts out Maryland

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State women's soccer got back to their winning ways on Thursday night, besting Maryland by a 2-0 margin under the lights at DeMartin Stadium.
With tonight's win, the Spartans pick up their tenth victory of the season and move to 10-3-3 overall. They are 5-3-1 in the Big Ten and sit in fourth place among league standings.
Michigan State got off to a hot start on offense, outshooting Maryland five to two early on and aiming one shot on goal. In the 18th minute, Zivana Labovic set up Ava Cook on the right side of the box with the cross. Cook was there at the head of the net for a sliding shot off her right foot and a successful strike, putting MSU up 1-0.
Ten minutes later, Cook came up with her second goal of the game. Lauren DeBeau brought the ball up midfield to Cook, who dodged a Maryland defender and sent the ball past the Terrapins goalkeeper for a left-footed goal.
The Spartans outshot the Terrapins 11-5 in the first half with an advantage in shots on goal. Lauren Kozal had a pair of saves.
In the second frame, Michigan State kept up the intensity with several close chances. In the 54th minute, DeBeau had a long strike that just missed goal, hitting the crossbar. Cook took a chance off the missed shot, but was deflected by a Terrapin defender. MJ Andrus had a pair of near-successful shots with 20 minutes remaining in the half.
The Spartans had a few more late charges at the goal, putting ten more shots on the board in the second half and holding Maryland to just four shot attempts. Michigan State held a 21-9 shot advantage overall. They totaled eight shots on goal, and earned 11 corner kicks.
Goalkeeper Lauren Kozal recorded the clean sheet with her seventh shutout of the season. She tallied four saves for the Green & White.
Michigan State is back on Sunday, Oct. 24 for their final home game of the season and a Senior Day celebration. Kickoff against Penn State is set for 1 p.m.
