Babiak nets MSU’s goal in regular-season home finale.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's soccer was topped by No. 7 Maryland, 3-1, on a brisk Friday night at DeMartin Stadium in MSU's regular-season home finale.
The Spartans are now 6-7-2 overall with the loss and 2-3-2 in Big Ten action. Maryland moves to 11-2-1 overall and 4-1-1 in B1G play. Friday night's result levels the overall series between the Spartans and Terrapins at 6-6-5, as Maryland is 4-1-2 vs. MSU in the last seven meetings, and the 2021 version of the series was just the fifth time in the 17 overall meetings that the result was decided by two or more goals, as the series includes five ties and five overtime matches, with six one-goal decisions.
"It was a tough result tonight, with the way we started the game was an unfortunate goal, you don't want to give one up that early, and that kind of set the tone," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. "We had the play where the Maryland player got hurt, first of all I'd like to say we hope he's doing well, and I wish him, his family and the team all the best. To Maryland's credit, they came out of that injury in the last 10 minutes of the half and got another goal, so it was tough to go down 2-0 at half."
Freshman forward Zach Babiak netted the Spartans' lone goal, coming in the 47th minute, for the first goal of his Spartan career. Redshirt-junior defender Will Perkins and senior midfielder Louis Sala earned assists on Babiak's goal with some nifty passing. Freshman goalkeeper Lance McGrane made his second-straight start and third of the season, making two saves on the night, and breaking up several Maryland passes.
The visiting Terps got on the board early, as Brayan Padilla netted a long-range goal from the top of the arc in the second minute, getting a through-ball from Jacen Russell-Rowe and Alex Nitzl.
Maryland maintained its 1-0 lead for the majority of the first half, until MSU mounted some momentum and generated some chances. With just over 11 minutes left, the Spartans got the ball into the box, but a collision of players caused a stoppage in action while the Maryland player received medical attention.Â
When play resumed, both teams were a little sluggish on the brisk, damp night, but the Spartans maintained pressure, getting some shots, but unable to break through. However, the Terps countered in the 41st minute, and Joshua Bolma took a pass from Caden Stafford and bent the ball around McGrane, off the right post and into the net for a 2-0 UMD lead.
MSU threatened in the final minutes of the half, but were unable to get on the board in the first 45 minutes, and went into intermission trailing, 2-0. UMD had a slight, 4-3, edge in shots.
The Spartans erupted out of halftime, and Babiak's left-footed chip into the upper right corner of the net got the home team on the board less than two minutes into the start of the second half. Perkins and Sala earned the assists, with nice passing on the build up. Perkins dribbled the ball along the wing, slipping a pass to Sala, who then deposited the ball through the Terps' defense to an on-running Babiak inside the box and he lofted a beautiful ball over Maryland keeper Niklas Neumann and into the right side-netting of the goal to close within 2-1 in the 47th minute.
"Our guys rallied and we got a goal right of the bat in the second half, and we were really looking to get the second, and had a couple great chances, but any time you push it, to try to get that goal, you're going to open yourselves up, and Maryland's got some good, dangerous players and they beat us on one to go up 3-1," Rensing said. "To our guys' credit, there's no quit in this team, and that's what I love about them; they just kept pushing and it just wasn't happening."
Michigan State pressured for the equalizer, but was unable to break through the Terp defense, keeping the one-goal deficit.Â
However, the deficit grew to 3-1 in the 66th minute after Maryland's Ben Bender took a nice centering pass from Russell-Rowe and put it past McGrane.
Michigan State did not go quietly into the chilly, dark night, as the Spartans had several chances, but were unable to hit the net before the clock struck 0:00.
MSU wraps up regular-season action heading to Evanston, Ill. on Sunday, Oct. 31 to tangle with Northwestern in a Halloween match-up at 4 p.m. ET., and Sunday's match will be streamed on BTN+.
