
MSU Stopped by Northwestern in Regular-Season Finale; Face No. 1 Penn State in B1G Tournament

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's soccer fell to Northwestern in its regular-season finale, 3-1, Sunday in Evanston, Illinois.
Despite the loss, the Spartans captured the No. 8 seed in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament. Michigan State will take on top-seeded Penn State on Sunday, Nov. 7 at 4 p.m. on the Big Ten Network. Earlier this season, the Nittany Lions topped the Spartans, 1-0, on Oct. 1.
Michigan State ends the regular season with a 6-8-2 record and a 2-4-2 mark in Big Ten contests. Northwestern stands 6-8-2 overall and 3-5-0 in league play.
The Wildcats jumped on the board early scoring with Justin Weiss scoring the first of his two goals on the day. He found the back of the net off of passes from Vincent Castro and Jose Del Valle.
In the 15th minute, the Spartans found the equalizer thanks to senior forward Farai Mutatu. The play started with a long pass from the left side from senior midfielder Michael Miller, who found the foot of Mutatu for his team-leading seventh goal of the season.
In the second half it was all Wildcats. In the 49th minute, Spencer Farina scored off a corner kick, Northwestern sealed the win in the 54th minute when Weiss scored his second goal of the game.
MSU scored on its only shot on goal and ended the game with seven total shots. Mutatu and senior midfielder Jack Beck led the Spartans with a pair of shots apiece.
