Women Place Third, Men Finish Fifth at Big Ten Cross Country Championships

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Four all-conference finishes by the Spartans highlighted a rainy day on the Penn State campus, as the Michigan State men's and women's cross country teams concluded the 2021 Big Ten Championships on Friday at the Blue & White Golf Courses in University Park, Pa.
A fourth-place individual finish by senior Morgan Beadlescomb in the 5.2-mile race propelled the Spartan men to fifth place at 134 points, while the MSU women took home third place at 82 points, led by seniors Jenna Magness (third) and Lynsie Gram (eighth) both posting top-10 times in the 6K race.
Wisconsin claimed the Big Ten men's title as Bob Liking (First - 24:38.7) and Olin Hacker (Second – 24:42.3) took the top spots in the men's 5.2-mile race, followed by Illinois' Jonathan Davis (Third – 24:44.0) and Beadlescomb (24:46.3). Michigan finished second at 79 points, beating out Minnesota (83 points) and Indiana (119 points).
Beadlescomb notched All-Big Ten First Team honors for his performance, his third time receiving first team all-conference recognition during his Michigan State cross country career.
Two other Spartan men recorded top-30 finishes, as junior James Uhlenberg took 28th at a time of 25:41.1 while redshirt junior Fraser Wilson finished 30th at 25:42.8. Sophomore Brendan Favazza was just outside the top-30, placing 35th with a 25:49.0 time, and redshirt junior Abdi Ahmed was closely behind him in 39th (25:53.1). A time of 26:08.6 landed senior John Petruno in 52nd, while sophomore Andrew Nolan placed 56th at 26:16.3. Junior Aden Smith ran a 26:19.0 time to take home 62nd and senior Steven Stine was 83rd with a posting of 27:05.2.
In the women's race, Minnesota took home the Big Ten title with 72 points, as Megan Hasz won the individual title at 20:34.5 one season after her sister Bethany Hasz claimed the conference crown. Wisconsin edged out MSU with 78 points, while rival Michigan was three points behind the Spartans in fourth and Indiana finished fifth at 152 points.
Magness took third place at the Big Ten Championships for the second-straight season with a time of 20:40.0, while Gram crossed the finish line at 20:49.1 to place eighth, as Magness received All-Big Ten First Team distinction for the second time in ten months and Gram earned All-Big Ten Second Team honors for the second-straight campaign. Freshman Kaitlyn Hynes grabbed 12th and an All-Big Ten Second Team selection with a personal record time of 21:04.8, becoming the first MSU true freshman to earn all-conference honors on the women's side since Maggie Farrell in 2017.
Redshirt junior Makayla Perez was the fourth Spartan woman to place in the top-20, finishing 20th at 21:14.2, and sophomore Makenna Veen placed 40th at a PR time of 21:35.7. A 50th-place finish for junior Katie Osika came at a time of 21:52.7, while redshirt senior Casey Mossholder placed 84th (22:38.0) and junior Melanie Helder ran a 22:40.9 time to place 87th.
