EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State men's and women's cross country teams continue their season on Friday, Nov. 12 in Evansville, Indiana at the 2021 NCAA Great Lakes Regional. The Spartans are trying to earn spots in next week's NCAA National Championships in Tallahassee, Florida following the women finishing third and the men placing fifth at the Big Ten Championships.
"We're really looking forward to the entire team coming with the same energy found at the conference meet," said Director of Cross Country/Track & Field Lisa Breznau. "Everyone plays a role in pushing us forward."
The No. 16 MSU women are looking to repeat as regional champions after taking the Great Lakes title in 2019, while the men will attempt to improve upon a sixth-place finish at the 2019 regionals. The 2020 regional races were not held due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as the Spartans went straight from the conference championships to the national championship races in Stillwater, Oklahoma in the spring of 2021.
Michigan State enters Friday ranked third in the region on the women's side behind fellow B1G members Michigan and Wisconsin, while the men are sixth regionally, with in-conference foes Wisconsin, Michigan and Indiana ahead of them in the Great Lakes rankings.
"The regional meet is an important portion of our journey in staying consistent and keeping our sense of self a priority," added Breznau.
Senior Jenna Magness highlighted the third-place finish by the Spartan women at the B1Gs, taking third place individually for the second-straight season and earning All-B1G First Team honors with a 6K time of 20:40.0. Graduate student Lynsie Gram was not far behind, finishing eighth at 20:49.1, and freshman Kaitlyn Hynes ran a personal record of 21:04.8 to place 12th, as both runners picked up All-B1G Second Team distinction. Hynes also won the Big Ten Freshman of the Year award earlier this week.
"Hynes has made substantial progress throughout the season," said Breznau. "Our upperclassmen have helped to mentor her along, giving Kaitlyn the confidence to compete at a high level."
On the men's front, senior Morgan Beadlescomb paced MSU in the 5.2-mile race with a 24:46.3 time to take fourth overall and pick up an all-conference first team selection, while juniors James Uhlenberg (25:41.1) and Fraser Wilson (25:42.8) finished 28th and 30th, respectively, for the fifth-place Green and White.
"Since the beginning of the season, both teams have made progress in establishing our identity," concluded Breznau. "We have some continuity through the leadership of our upperclassmen, but adding in first and second-year runners, while building relationships and trust has helped both teams move forward."
At the 2019 Regionals, Annie Fuller paced the Spartans by taking second in the women's race, with Magness (20:25.7 – Seventh) and Gram (20:30.7 – Eighth) both finishing in the top-10 as well. Beadlescomb captured sixth place in the 10k men's event with a personal best time of 30:16.2, a mark that earned him an individual berth in the 2019 NCAA National Championship race.
Michigan State is looking to advance to its 21st consecutive NCAA Championship race for the women, while the men are looking to make their third team appearance at the NCAA Championships since 2017.
