Michigan State head coach Mel Tucker
Opening statement…
A few more folks in here than normal. What a game, the game kind of speaks for itself. Excuse my voice, I only raise my voice in enthusiasm. But I was really proud of all of our players. One thing that we know about our guys that they're going to keep playing and they don't quit. And there was never a time in the game when we felt like we were out of it. We never felt like we were overmatched. We felt like we needed to continue to execute better on both sides of the ball. We were able to make some adjustments and find a way to make some plays. We started to convert more, throw it down on offense and guys playing extremely hard on defense. And honestly, we've got some playmakers who were able to make some plays.
But it was a team win and I'll tell you what, our fans, they never gave up on us. No one left, they stayed in there down 16 (points) and kept helping us and pulling us through and that's what Spartans do. We're resilient, hardworking, earning everything that you get. Someone just asked me what this win means to me. It means – it's not about me – it's about Spartan nation, our players, our staff, Michigan State University, all of our fans, all of our former players – Spartan Dawgs – and all of our 500,000-plus alumni across the country and around the world. We know how important this game is to all Spartans and we don't take that lightly.
So, I know there's a lot of happy Spartans right now celebrating and that's what this is all about. Obviously, this is a huge win.
Ken, Kenny Walker, I don't know what else I can say. This is a huge stage, the whole world's watching. You got a chance to see what type of player he is, and, obviously, any recognition that he's getting, Heisman consideration, is well deserved. Obviously, (the) offensive line, tight ends, wide receivers doing a great job blocking. Obviously, he's a difference maker. So, just overall, a strong effort for our team. We're in the hunt, we're in the hunt. We have a strong opponent next week and we need to go on to road and play good football, And we've got some things to improve upon, but obviously this is a game that we had to have. So, we were able to get it done.
On slowing down the Michigan running game…
Well, you know really, up front it's about being gap-sound, set an edge and build a wall. We were able to do that on a fairly consistent basis in the game. We knew that they were going to run the ball quite a bit. We were really stout up front, and it was physical in the trenches. We got the run support that we needed. We wanted to make sure that we can contain their run game, and obviously we forced them to throw the ball, and if they can beat us doing that, then they'll get us. But at the end of the day, stopping the run for the most part it was critical and important on defense.
On celebration in the locker room with players and spending more time with the Paul Bunyan Trophy…
That's one of the things about football, because the locker room, especially after a victory, there's nothing like it because everyone is a part of it. You look around, you got players and coaches, trainers in there, academic support folks are in there. Administration is in there. We had former players in there. I mean obviously, recruits (were in there). So, it's a moment to celebrate and just to take note of a huge accomplishment. It is not easy to win football game. It's really difficult, especially when you play good teams. So, when you can get a win and you get in that locker room, there's nothing like it. So, to see Paul (Bunyan) in there is special. I told them to look at Paul, he's right here happy, he's where he belongs. He's in there, We're taking pictures with him. Guys are dancing and things like that. My dad happened to be at the game and he actually took a picture with Paul. So, that's kind of what it's like. Those are memories, like Coach (Tom) Izzo told our team during the week – he spoke to them after practice (on Thursday) – he said, you know, memories for a lifetime. That was an epic game, that was a classic. That was a big-time game. So it's an honor and a privilege to be a part of something like that.
On quickly becoming a team that's able to compete in tight games…
Well, first and foremost, we have a tremendous staff, and coaching staff. And we're all on the same page. And we see the game of football the same. So we believe in what we're doing. We believe in our process, we've talked about everything A-Z that we're doing, we're not experimenting with anything. Everything is part of our process, and we stick to it. And that translates to the players. And what we tell our players and how we go about our business, it really resonates with them. They know that we have a plan for them. It's a winning plan. It's a winning formula. And so they pour into it, they buy in. And this is something that we continue to hammer every day. You know, we're always selling our process, you know, always hammering in detail, the sense of urgency, the accountability, teamwork, discipline. And so we do that day after day. You gotta have guys who buy into it, good players, guys who have talent to put the work in, then you have a chance to get what you want. We ask players, what do you want and what are you willing to do to get it?
On the "Tuck Comin'" slogan and other Spartan chants…
I don't mind it. I think it's fun. It's a great way to engage with our fans. We have great fans, really the best fans in the country. And this is a football town. This is a football school. We have a lot of pride in tradition here at Michigan State with Spartan football, and so that's where our fans deserve. They deserve to see good football and see a tough, hard-nosed football team out there who won't quit. They deserve to see winning football, they deserve to have a coaching staff and players who appreciate them, and we appreciate our fans, we care about our students, our students section, we offer them a community, you know, we're all connected through the game of football. It's not about us, it's about everyone, and all Spartans. So 'Tuck Comin',' or K9 for Heisman, or the Deep End or the Woodshed, whatever it is. That's what college football is all about.
Looking further down the road after a 2-0 coaching start against Michigan…
Yeah, maybe further down the road. But football is the ultimate team sport. And there's just so many people involved, we're committed. It's not a one-man show. So anything that happens on the field, you know, I'm a part of it. But it's not all me. We have a great coaching staff. We have great players that believe in what we're doing. And we have great support, from our administration, and our former players… everyone's a part of it. So, you win the first few games, against the school down the road. You know, and it's never been done? Well, you know, there's the first time for everything. But it's not about me, it's about everyone else, that's really part of this effort.
On the road to becoming a national-championship contention team…
Yeah, I don't believe in self-imposed limitations. I've said this before publicly, our goal is to win every game on our schedule. Whether it's home or away, or regardless of who it is, that's our goal. Now whether we can do that or not, only time will tell. So what does success look like? I've been asked several times, success is us reaching our highest potential as a football team, and we have not yet, we still have room for improvement. And we have a tough schedule ahead. Next week, against a very strong team (at Purdue). And you know, it's tough sledding. We need to be playing the best football in November, if you want to get anything done in terms of what you're talking about. And so we got a ways to go. What's most important is what's next, from our preparation next week – we got to rest and recover and we got to focus on our next opponent and take the show on the road.
What it felt like to come out of the tunnel and hear the fans…
It was an electric atmosphere. Students section was there, they were there early. And it was a lot of excitement, a lot of anticipation. When you're playing the school down the road, there's a different look in people's eyes. It means a little bit more to feel that in the woodshed. It was packed and everyone was there and the whole world was watching. So it was very impressive and inspiring. How can you not play your heart out or coach your heart out in an atmosphere like that? We're all in it together.
On players returning from injury…
The bye week was a good time for us. We needed to try to get as healthy as we possibly could and to rest of the guys up but you mentioned, the D-line, Drew [Beesley], everything they possibly could to get back and be ready for the game. Beesley told me, I want to be a captain for the Michigan game. And we didn't list him because we didn't' know if he was going to make it. He did everything, he got 24 hours around the clock treatment. And that's huge. Those types of players with foundational players, they motivate coaches, they motivate their teammates, epitomize was Spartan football is all about, what it means to be a Spartan. Just the minimum physical toughness and going out there and laying it on the line. He wanted to be there for his teammates. All the guys have been banged up and worked really hard to get healthier for this game. At this time of the year, no one's 100 percent, everybody's dealing with something in some way, but everybody rallied the best they could to be available for this game.
On feeling a sense of accomplishment at how far the team has come…
Well, you know, we've done what we've what we needed to do up until this point. But we've still got a long ways to go. We got a lot of games coming up, you know, starting next week, and there'll be plenty of time to add it all up. But right now, it's the 24-hour rule and then on to the next. That's one way to approach it. And that's the way our teams would approach it. We have a lot of football left, we don't believe in self-imposed limitations, we get what we can get.
Michigan Head Coach Jim HarbaughÂ
On the ability to put it in the endzone…
The one right before the half was kind of the clock. Got a holding penalty on us on the second one, and the third one we got stopped.
On thoughts about the fumble Hutchinson had…
No, I made my thoughts known throughout the game.
On thoughts about Cade McNamara saying it was pass interference on the one fourth down play…
Yeah. As I said, I made my thoughts known as the game was going on.
On Andrel Anthony's special performance especially the first touchdown…
That one and there was plenty more. He played outstanding. I'm really proud of Andrel.
On Kenneth Walker's performance…
He had an outstanding performance. He's a very good back. He's a great back.
On the fumble McCarthy had…
Yeah, that exchange didn't go smoothly.
On losing a 16-point lead…
Yeah, this didn't go the way we wanted too. We are going to learn from it and strengthen our resolve moving forward.
On Cade's availability on the McCarthy fumble…
He was working through something at that point.
On the punt that was bobbled…
As he was dropping the ball, it slipped out of his hands to punt it. It was a designed punt.
On what Michigan State did to limit your running backs…
They tackled very well.
MSU Redshirt Sophomore QB Payton Thorne:
On the fourth-down conversion...
Call came in, I loved it, I knew we had a matchup there. Thankfully, they rolled coverage, and I think they played straight man. I have confidence that he is going to win that every time he (Jayden Reed) runs it, no matter who plays him. It felt good coming out of my hand, I was watching and praying that he would come down with it, and he made a good play.
On Walker's ability to score...
On the first one we were in the huddle and I said 'forget the red zone let's score right here'. With him, any play can be a home run play. It's a huge win, every week is big from here on out, every week is big in college football. Great win. Our defense played well too. All phases of the game I thought were solid today. Getting out of here with a win is huge. Being able to win on our home field in front of our fans is huge.
On Jayden Reed...
This is what I've dreamed of my whole life, to play in a game like this. And to do it with my lifelong friend like that, what more can you ask?
On what it means to win this game...
When you come here, you know the importance of Paul Bunyan. He sits right in our lobby all year. We play for each other and our coaches. But most importantly, we play for the former players that have been here, it means so much to them because they have had a taste of it. They know what it feels like. I had them in mind all game to be honest, you don't want to let those guys down, you know they are watching.
On Coach Mel Tucker...
There's nobody in the country I'd rather play for than him. I'm extremely blessed to be able to play for a coach like that, at a school like this, and with teammates like I have.
MSU Junior RB Kenneth Walker III
On offense in the second half…
Going into the second half, we knew that we were going to have to start fast. Coach Tucker made it apparent. He does a good job of keeping us going and making sure we're intense so when we came out in the second half we knew we were going to have to do that.
On this being his Heisman moment??…Â
Overall I don't feel like it's a Heisman moment, but I feel like it was just a great team win.
On how he is feeling after a 5 TD rivalry win...Â
I'm super excited. I know I'm holding it in right now but I'm super excited. I'm a bit shy.
On thoughts of first U-M/MSU game, significance in winning this game this year…
I believe it was a crazy game. Super intense. Fans came out. I believe this win is very important. Even during the bye week we watched a lot of history on the rivalry. I didn't know much at the time. But when I was able to see the history of it, and the alumni were able to talk to us, it meant that much more.
On the keep choppin' mentality when down 30-14…Â
I just knew, at that point, to keep choppin. We go over it every practice. Every game. That's our motto. Keep choppin. I knew that was going to be what we had to do.
MSU Redshirt Junior WR Jayden ReedÂ
After the first rough plays from Thorne, what he saw to keep moving forward…Â
He just kept a next play mentality. You can't stay on the last play. That'll mess up your game if you do. So he just kept that next play mentality and that helped us out a lot.
On Walker's - mindset with the big plays…Â
Man, I saw it from when he first got here, I knew he was going to be a playmaker, and a big playmaker. He was going to make the "big chunk" plays for us. That opens up stuff for us, because when they load the box they gotta play true to the run. So that opens up over the top and it helps us get open.
On what this win means to the program - record, rankings what it means to you inside the building…
This one means a ton. It's bigger than the team. Alumni, fans, everybody in Spartan Nation, this one means a lot. We take pride in this game and every year we take pride in it. We work as hard as we can to come out on top. We'll continue to work hard and focus on next week.Â
Senior Safety Xavier Henderson
On having Drew Beesley back for this game…
Really just having his presence there was big. His leadership. Drew is the true definition of a Spartan Dawg. Drew is a big-time leader for us and him being out there shows how much he loves the game and how much he loves Michigan State. I'm not even sure how well he played or not. I have to watch the film but having his presence is great.
On having the bye week being good for you…
It felt good. It was good for everybody though. We have been on the field too long though on defense and that's our fault. We got to get off on third downs. It was a good Michigan team, and they came out with a good game plan, but we got to keep trying to get off the field on third down, that's our Achilles heel right now.
