Spartan Soccer Battles to 2-2 Tie at Michigan
10/6/2021 12:07:00 AM | Men's Soccer
Ann Arbor, Mich. - With a pair of goals in the second half, Michigan State men's soccer battled to a 2-2 double overtime tie against Michigan on Tuesday night at a sold out U-M Soccer Stadium. With the tie, the Big Bear Trophy will stay in Ann Arbor for another year.
"This was a crazy, great soccer game. Nothing ever disappoints in this derby. Â This is one of the greatest rivalries not just in the Big Ten, but in all of college soccer. Obviously, coming into this hostile environment, I thought our guys were good," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. "We gave up an early goal, and own goal, and I thought our guys showed great character. We came out flying in the second half and scored two goals."
In their second overtime game of the season, the Spartans now stand 4-5-2 overall and 0-2-2 in Big Ten contests. Michigan is 5-4-2 overall and 2-1-1 in league.
In the fourth minute, Michigan State was unable to clear the ball out of the box, leading to an own goal.
After the goal, the Spartans looked to find the equalizer. In the 33rd minute after an impressive series of passes, sophomore midfielder Jacob Cromer's blast was deflected and sailed just over the cross bar.Â
At the end of the first half, the Wolverines held on to their 1-0 advantage.
Michigan State came out hot in the second half with a beautiful pass from senior midfielder Michael Miller to senior forward Farai Mutatu. The shot from Mutatu sailed just wide to keep the score 1-0 Â in favor of the Wolverines.
Mutatu and the Spartans found the equalizer in the 50th minute. Junior forward Kellan Landefeld started the sequence up left side before finding Mutatu just outside the six-yard box. The blast got past a diving Hayden Evans to the lower right hand corner to make it a 1-1 game.
Less than two minutes later, the Michigan State offense was back at it again. In the 52nd minute, junior defender Nick Stone scored his first goal of the season. Mutatu was once again in on the action finding senior midfielder Jack Beck. Stone completed the play to the lower left corner to give MSU the 2-1 lead.
Michigan was done yet, tying the score 2-2 in the 82nd minute off of a header by Brennan Callow, sending the game to overtime.
In the first overtime, Morse was clutch, making a pair of saves to send it to a second overtime. In the second OT, freshman defender Chase Inscho had the only shot, as the team battled to a 2-2 tie.
Michigan State will continued its three-game road trip at Rutgers on Sunday, Oct. 10 at 2:30 p.m.Â
