
Spartan Women Stopped by St. Francis Tuesday

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, NY - Michigan State women's basketball fell to St. Francis Brooklyn 66-63 on Tuesday at Pope Physical Education Center.
Michigan State has lost two straight, falling to 4-2 this season, while St. Francis improves to 2-3 this season.
Senior guard Nia Clouden had her third-straight 20-point game with 21 points to go along with four assists and two steals. Freshman forward Matilda Ekh added 14 points and a career-high four steals. Junior Moira Joiner was solid off the bench with seven points and six rebounds, while junior forward Taiyier Parks had her first double-digit rebound performance of the season with 10 boards.
The Terriers had four in double figures led by 14 points from Khaleah Edwards.
The Spartans used a 9-0 run to take a 11-4 lead midway through the first quarter, but the offense stalled from there going scoreless for over the final 3:58 of the period. The Terriers replied with a 9-0 run of their own to take a 13-11 lead. Clouden led the way with five points in the quarter.
In the second quarter, Michigan State scored the first five points of the period, but junior guardAlyza Winston was called for her third foul, taking her off the court. Clouden continued to shine in the second quarter with nine points. Despite the strong play of Clouden and Ekh, MSU could not shake the Terriers. MSU went 1-for-7 to end the quarter, leading St. Francis 32-29 at the half.
After halftime, the Terriers scored five straight to cut the MSU lead to 44-41 before a pair of Clouden free throws stopped the surge. Michigan State took as big a lead as eight points after a 3-pointer by freshman guard DeeDee Hagemann at the 5:10 mark, but St. Francis was able to trim the lead to three at the end of the quarter.
St. Francis was hot from long range in the fourth quarter to keep the game tight taking a 58-57 lead with under six to play in the game. The teams continued to trade baskets for much of the quarter until both teams went scoreless for over two minutes. A pair of free throws by Jaila Lee gave the Terriers the 66-63 lead with 13.1 seconds remaining. With the final possession, MSU was unable to find the game-tying basket.
Michigan State concludes its three-game road trip at Oakland on Friday, Nov. 26 at 3 p.m.
