Forwards Parks and Ekh both get career highs in scoring in the win.
ROCHESTER, Mich. - Forwards Matilda Ekh and Taiyier Parks both set career highs in scoring, as MSU women's basketball stopped Oakland, 84-71 Friday at the Athletics Center O'rena.
Michigan State snapped a two-game losing streak, improving to 5-2 this season. Oakland falls to 2-4 with losses to both Michigan and Michigan State. The Spartans got back to their offensive scoring ways after being held under 70 points for two-straight games.
Five Spartans scored in double-figures led by senior guard Nia Clouden, who had her fourth-straight 20-point game with 23 points. Ekh added a new career-high 17 points with two blocks and two steals. Parks was close to a double-double with a career-high 16 points and eight boards, while junior guard Alyza Winston and senior forward Alisia Smith added 12 and 13 points, respectively. Freshman guard DeeDee Hagemann distributed the ball well with a career-high 10 assists, part of MSU's season-high tying 27 helpers.
Behind seven quick points from Clouden, MSU jumped out to an early 12-5 lead midway through the first period. After a pair of Parks free throws at the 4:43 mark, the Spartans held a 17-9 advantage. The Spartans took their biggest lead of the quarter 25-13 after Ekh's seventh point of the quarter.
In the second quarter, the Golden Grizzlies scored the first eight points of the period to cut the MSU lead to 27-26. A mini 5-1 run over 1:04 led to a Spartan 37-29 lead with less that three minutes left in the half. Despite shooting only 33.3 percent from the field, Michigan State was able to hold on to a 39-32 at the half. Parks was solid in the first half with eight points.
A Luchenbach bucket at the 5:11 mark of the third quarter tied it at 48-48, before a Clouden layup put MSU back on top. Michigan State ended the quarter with a 10-0 run highlighted by an Ekh trey to lead 65-51, heading into the final period. The Golden Grizzlies used the long ball to keep within distance, but MSU always had a response.
After pulling away in the third quarter, the Spartans maintained the lead in the final period. Winston scored six points in the fourth quarter, going 3-for-3. Kahlaijah Dean came to life in the fourth period with a 11 points, but it wasn't enough for the Grizzlies.
Michigan State finally returns to the friendly confines of the Breslin Center to face Marshall on Sunday, Nov. 28 at 2 p.m.
