Spartan Hockey Gathers Food, Bears For Lansing Community

The Michigan State hockey program is grateful to its hockey fans and surrounding community for its support of community outreach activities throughout the month of November.Â
Throughout the month, the Spartan players and staff have been working on cultivating their facial hair in an effort to raise money for Movember, a movement created to raise money for prostate and testicular health as well as men's mental health and suicide prevention initiatives. Donations are accepted through Nov. 30, and fans are highly encouraged to donate through the MSU Hockey Team's Team Movember SiteÂ
Â
For the Saturday, Nov. 20 game, the hockey game vs. Wisconsin was the backdrop for the annual Teddy Bear Toss, at which more than 300 stuffed toys were collected. The toys will go to Lansing Child and Family Charities for distribution for this holiday season.
Â
The annual Student-Athlete Food Drive, with representatives from 12 Spartan varsity teams, collected more than 5,000 pounds of food for the Greater Lansing Food Bank. While non-perishable items were collected at MSU's Nov. 19 game at Munn Ice Arena, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) also distributed food bags with flyers in local neighborhoods. Those homes receiving the flyer could fill their bags and leave them on their front porch for pickup on a designated day, and Spartan student-athletes went back into the community a second time to collect those donations.Â
