UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Michigan State men's soccer was not able to overcome an early goal by top-seeded Penn State as the No. 8-seeded Spartans fell 2-0 in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament Sunday.
Michigan State ends the season with a 6-9-2 record, while Penn State advances to the semifinals and will host No. 4-seeded Michigan next week.
The Big Ten Champions wasted no time getting on the board just 25 seconds into the game. After a throw in, Peter Mangione's header to the lower right corner slipped past redshirt-senior goalkeeper Hunter Morse, giving Penn State early 1-0 advantage.
The Nittany Lions made it a 2-0 lead in the 17th minute with an Andrew Privett blast to the top left corner.
With seven minutes remaining in the first half, senior midfielder Michael Miller had a dangerous opportunity, but PSU goalkeeper Kris Shakes was able to make the save. The Spartans were able to create some chances in their offensive third in the waning minutes of the first half, but the Nittany Lions took the 2-0 lead into the lockerroom.
In the second half, the Spartans threatened with back-to-back shots by senior forward Farai Mutatu and senior defender Luke Morrell, but Shakes was able to stop the MSU attack. Michigan State out-shot Penn State 10-3 in the second half and 12-7 overall. The Spartans earned six corner kicks compared to one by the Nittany Lions.
Despite much of the second half being played on the Spartan offensive third. MSU was unable to find the back of the net. Penn State's Shakes was exceptional in goal to preserve the shutout.
