Spartan Women Open Season With Record-Setting Win Over Morehead State

Michigan State sets a new school record with 17 3-pointers made.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Six players scored in double figures as the Michigan State women's basketball team opened the 2021-22 season with a resounding 93-31 win over Morehead State Tuesday night at the Breslin Center.
MSU set a new school record with 17 3-pointers made, going 17-of-28 from long distance. The previous record was 15 against Bowling Green on Nov. 16, 2018.
Junior guard Alyza Winston led all scorers with 20 points to go along with a career-high six steals, while senior guard Nia Clouden added 15 points and seven assists. Senior guard Laurel Jacqmain had a career-high 11 points off the bench, while freshman Mathilda Ekh also had 11 in her Spartan debut. Freshman guard DeeDee Hagemann and junior guard Moira Joiner both added 10.
The Spartans were strong from long range from early on, hitting three of their first five. Michigan State ended the quarter on an 11-0 run to take a 22-8 lead. Clouden lead all scorers with six points in the first 10 minutes of action.
In the second quarter, the Spartan offense continued to apply the pressure. With 6:48 left in the half, Clouden halted a brief two-minute MSU scoring drought with a steal and a score to make it a 29-10 Spartan advantage. After forcing five turnovers in under five minutes, the lead expanded to 41-18 at the half.
Winston took control in the third period with 10 points and three steals in under eight minutes of playing time. The Spartan defense continued to stymie the Eagles, forcing 12 turnovers in the period. MSU was able to convert those turnovers into 19 points.
The Spartans scored the first nine points of the final stanza, while getting of playing time for the MSU newcomers. Jacqmain was the highlight of the fourth period with back-to-back-to back treys, making the most of her playing time.
All 13 Michigan State players that were in uniform played in the season opener.
Michigan State continues its five-game homestand against Niagara on Sunday, Nov. 14 at 2 p.m.
