EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State gymnastics had a successful showing at its annual Green and White meet on Saturday afternoon inside Jenison Fieldhouse.
The Green and White meet gave the large contingent of spirited Spartan fans their first chance to cheer on Michigan State since February 2021. The Green team, led by Baleigh Garcia, Delanie Harkness, Lauren Hsu, Tori Loomis, Lea Mitchell, Alaina Raybon, Katie Sawyer, Gabrielle Stephen and Alyssa Wiedeman, took first place overall at today's competition.
"Overall, we're thrilled with what they did today, and really proud of the progress they've made in the past couple of weeks since Meet the Spartans," MSU head coach Mike Rowe said. "The details are actually carrying over from day-to-day, which is awesome, and getting good feedback and having that pressure from the judges was nice. We're really excited and still have time to clean things up even more before we open."
Freshman Skyla Schulte took took top honors in the all-around category, posting a score of 39.050.
Stephen posted a 9.900 on vault, followed by Garcia with a score of 9.850. Harkness led all gymnasts in the bars competition with a 9.900, while Schulte, Stephen and Mitchell all earned a mark of 9.850. Schulte and Mitchell each posted a 9.900 on beam, and Mitchell capped off a successful day with a first-place score of 9.750 in the floor competition, tying with Nyah Smith.
The Spartans return next month for their first official competition, traveling to UC Davis for a quad meet with Sacramento State and UW-Oshkosh on Sunday, Jan. 9. MSU's home opener is Saturday, Jan. 15, hosting a tri meet with Bowling Green and Illinois State in a 7 p.m. start.
