EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State gymnastics is ranked No. 36 in the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) Preseason Poll, the group announced Friday.
The Spartans received a No. 34 ranking prior to the start of the 2021 season and were ranked as high as No. 17 before the cancellation of the remainder of the schedule. Their season-best score was a 195.775 on January 30 that capped off a sweep of Nebraska and Ohio State in a tri-meet in the squad's home opener.
Similar to last year, MSU is one of nine Big Ten Conference teams ranked in the poll, including two in the top-ten. Michigan, last year's NCAA Champions, were predicted to repeat and received the No. 1 spot. Minnesota was ranked No. 9, followed by Iowa (No. 18), Ohio State (No. 22), Illinois (No. 23), Penn State (No. 29), Maryland (No. 31) and Nebraska (No. 32). Rutgers also received 81 points in the vote.
The Spartans will face a strong competition field this season, competing against nine other ranked teams. The season-opening quad meet at UC Davis features Sacramento State, who received votes in the preseason poll. Three Mid-American Conference teams that the Spartans will face are either ranked or received votes (Central Michigan No. 28, Western Michigan and Eastern Michigan RV), as well as Illinois State. Non-conference foe Kentucky was ranked No. 13.
Michigan State opens the 2022 season on January 9 at UC Davis with Sacramento State and UW-Oshkosh. Their first home meet takes place on January 15 at 7 p.m. with a tri-meet with Bowling Green and Illinois State.
