Saldate and Caffey Earn Major Decisions to Help MSU Earn 23-10 Victory
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Sophomore Caleb Fish notched his first winning decision over a top-10 opponent in the highlight bout of the evening, as the Michigan State wrestling team battled its way to a comfortable 23-10 victory over Bucknell on Friday night at Davis Gymnasium.
Â
Winning seven total bouts and recording two major decisions, the Spartans used the team victory to improve to 2-0 in dual competition, while the Bison now sit at 3-1 in dual meets.
Â
Opening the match at 125, graduate student Julian Saldana wrestled his opponent to extra time for the second-consecutive night, and had a better result than he did on Thursday, picking up a 4-2 (TB-2) decision over Brandon Seidman in the third overtime. The next two bouts were not as close, as redshirt senior Rayvon Foley posted a 7-0 decision against Kurt Phipps at 133 before graduate student Matt Santos picked up a 9-2 decision over Chris Lanciano in the 141 battle.
Â
Bucknell got its first winning decision in the 149 bout, as the Bison's Kolby DePron came back from an early deficit to knock off redshirt sophomore Peyton Omania in a high-scoring 16-12 decision. Sophomore Chase Saldate got the first bonus points of the night for MSU in his 157 bout with Nick Delp, earning an 11-1 major decision. That set the stage for Fish's big victory, as the Spartan erased a 5-1 hole when he took down and nearly pinned No. 10 Zach Hartman to go up 7-5 in the second period, holding on in the third to post a 9-5 decision.
Â
The Bison did get bonus points in the 174 clash, as Jaden Fisher got a 13-4 major decision over MSU redshirt junior Nathan Jimenez, but fellow redshirt junior Layne Malczewski was victorious at 184 with a 9-6 decision against Logan Deacetis. Redshirt senior Cameron Caffey recorded his second-straight major decision at 197, defeating Mason McCready by a 12-3 final, while the heavyweight match went by 11-5 decision to Bucknell's Luke Niemeyer over redshirt senior Brad Wilton to close the dual.
Â
The two sides did hold one extra match that did not count towards the team scores, as sophomore Marty Larkin recorded a 12-4 major decision against Bucknell 174-pounder Nolan Springer.
Â
Michigan State returns to the mat on Saturday, Dec. 11, when it travels to Boiling Springs, N.C., for a dual match at Gardner Webb. That showdown is set for 6 p.m.

Head Coach Roger Chandler's Comments
"I talk a lot about effort and execution within our program. It's amazing what a 24-hour turnaround can do and I'm really pleased with how our guys responded. Last night (at Lock Haven), we were wrestling very reactionary and not really going after it, not trying to take the matches, and tonight we did that. That's all I ask of my guys: give their best effort when they step out on the mat and walk away from a win like this knowing that you're making progress."
Â
"Caleb is still young, he's technically still a freshman (in eligibility), and I've been saying all along this kid is special. He's really special. He's gonna do big things. He wrestled a kid last night and kind of got paralyzed by the crowd and everything going on around him. So, we spoke last night and just focused on what he can do. You've got to have tunnel vision and block out all the outside noise. Then, he wrestled one of the toughest dudes in the country tonight. I have a lot of respect for his opponent, and Caleb just fought that guy in every single position. He ended up breaking Hartman down and just took advantage of it. So that was obviously a real big win for Caleb and I think you're going to see a lot more that come in the future."
Â
Rayvon has always been a leader within our program. He's used to putting lots of points on the board, and he's up at a new weight class this year. I think he's frustrated. He expects more out of himself but I think he's still adjusting to the weight and he'll keep pushing forward. Obviously, a big win for Julian, just staying in the match, being patient, not rushing anything. If you stay in the fight, good things happen. Then, with Santos, he just needs to wrestle his style and what he's best at, and that's what he did tonight. He controlled and dictated the pace. Eventually, he just broke his opponent down and was able to capitalize, breaking open the score."
Bout-By-Bout
125: Julian Saldana (MSU) dec. Brandon Seidman (BU), 4-2 (TB-2)
Saldana and Seidman held each other scoreless in the first, while Seidman got a quick escape after starting down in the second and Saldana did the same in the early part of the third frame. The two wrestlers kept the sudden victory period even, as Saldana got an escape in the second overtime. Seidman did the same to start the third overtime, but Saldana used that his advantage, scoring a takedown to end the bout in his favor, 4-2.
Â
133: No. 14 Rayvon Foley (MSU) dec. Kurt Phipps (BU), 7-0
Foley got a first-period takedown, and picked up two points in the second frame with a reversal. MSU had a successful challenge in the third that overturned a Phipps takedown, and Foley added another takedown before the final horn, adding the riding time bonus to secure the 7-0 decision.
Â
141: Matt Santos (MSU) dec. Chris Lanciano (BU), 9-2
Santos got a takedown in the first that Lanciano quickly escaped from, and the second started with Lanciano escaping the bottom in the opening ticks. Santos registered another takedown before the end of the middle frame, and got an additional point early in the third after a Lanciano stalling before having his third takedown of the bout. Another penalty point and the riding time bonus put Santos up, 9-2, to end the match.
Â
149: Kolby DePron (BU) dec. HM Peyton Omania (MSU), 16-12
Omania picked up an early takedown before DePron escaped in the first. The second period saw DePron escape and takedown Omania, picking up four near-fall points as well, but Omania got the reversal. DePron scored his own reversal before the close of the period, and got an escape before Omania had two takedowns and DePron escaped to make it 12-8 Bucknell. Omania had two takedowns and let DePron escape twice to make it 14-12, but DePron got a last-second takedown to close out the 16-12 decision.
Â
157: No. 21 Chase Saldate (MSU) maj. dec. Nick Delp (BU), 11-1
Saldate came out a frantic opening minute with a takedown, and got the reversal after starting the second in the down position. In the third, Saldate got his second takedown, letting Delp escape to then land his third takedown of the bout, as two stalling calls and the riding time gave Saldate an 11-1 major decision.
Â
165: Caleb Fish (MSU) dec. No. 10 Zach Hartman (BU), 9-5
Hartman got two takedowns in the opening period, as Fish's escape made it 4-1 Bucknell before the start of the second. Hartman then got an escape in the second, but Fish got a takedown and four-point near fall to flip the momentum heading into the third. Fish then got the third-period reversal and held on to upset the 10th-ranked Hartman, 9-5.
Â
174: Jaden Fisher (BU) maj. dec. Nathan Jimenez (BU), 13-4
Fisher got the takedown, and the two traded reversals before the first period closed. Fisher then scored an escape and a takedown in the second. Jimenez escaped in the third, but Fisher then added another takedown before letting Jimenez up again to score another takedown, using a late stalling point and riding time to take a 13-4 major decision.
Â
184: No. 22 Layne Malczewski (MSU) dec. Logan Deacetis (BU), 9-6
Despite a good attempt by Deacetis early, Malczewski responded with a first-period takedown. A two-point near fall by Deacetis was matched by Malczewski's reversal in the second, and Malczewski held the Bison wrestler down the rest of the period. Malczewski got the quick takedown in the third before letting Deacetis escape, and repeated that to push the score to 8-4. Deacetis got his own takedown, but Malczewski's escape late finished off the 9-6 decision in favor of MSU.
Â
197: No. 23 Cameron Caffey (MSU) maj. dec. Mason McCready (BU), 12-3
Caffey got two early takedowns, giving McCready two escapes, before adding a third takedown before the end of the first period. McCready escaped the down position in the second, but Caffey got another takedown shortly after. Caffey then escaped after starting down in the third, scoring a fifth takedown and riding time bonus to pick up the 12-3 major decision.
Â
285: Luke Niemeyer (BU) dec. Brad Wilton (MSU), 11-5
Niemeyer got the first-period throw, but Wilton got free for an escape and got his own takedown before letting Niemeyer out near the close of the first period. Down to start, Wilton got the escape in the second, but was called for stalling in the third and allowed a Niemeyer escape. Niemeyer then got a last-second takedown and four-point near fall as the buzzer sounded, giving him a 11-5 win with Wilton getting the riding time bonus.
