MSU Women’s Tennis Opens Big Ten Action This Weekend

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's tennis begins Big Ten dual match play this weekend taking on Maryland on Saturday, Feb. 13 and Rutgers on Sunday, Feb. 14. First serve for both matches will be at 11 a.m. at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
The Spartans started the season at the Purdue Invitational Jan. 29-31, as a warmup to the upcoming dual match season. Michigan State then faced Penn State in a non-conference dual on Feb. 5. The Nittany Lions came out on top in a tightly-contested battle, 4-3.
Againist Penn State, singles was a battle that came down to the last match. With the match tied 3-3, junior Lauren Lemonds took on Frederikke Svarre. The two split the first two sets with Svarre taking the first (7-6) and Lemonds winning the second 6-3. The final set was back and forth with Svarre sneaking past Lemonds, 7-5.
Michigan State earned wins at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles. At the No. 3 position, Samantha Memije dropped Smith in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Maja Pietrowicz powered past Olivia Ryan, 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 4 spot. At No. 5 singles, Ayashe Can defeated Alexandra Nielsen, 7-5, 7-5.
Following the games against Maryland and Rutgers, the Spartans will hit the road for a pair of road dual matches. Michigan State will take on Purdue on Feb. 20 and Indiana on Feb. 21.
