Spartans Begin Big Ten Season at Home This Weekend
2/18/2021 1:15:00 PM | Men's Tennis
EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State men's tennis team opens the Big Ten season this weekend (Saturday-Sunday, Feb. 20-21) at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, fans will not be allowed in attendance.
The Spartans will take on Minnesota Saturday at noon and Wisconsin on Sunday at noon. Live stats will be available at msuspartans.com and live video will be available via Playsight (https://web.playsight.com/facility/michigan-state-university/home).
MSU opened the 2021 season last Saturday at No. 8 Ohio State with a pair of nonconference duals. Although the Spartans fell in both matches, the road trip to Columbus provided the team with valuable experience heading into conference play. It was the first time MSU played a dual match since last Feb. 29.
"I think the biggest thing from last weekend was just getting comfortable in the moment – it's been a long time since we've competed," said MSU men's tennis head coach Gene Orlando. "It's hard to create the intensity and passion of a dual match in practice. I feel like we got that underneath our belts and know what to expect.
"We're definitely excited to be home. It's a unique situation for everyone without having family, friends and fans in the stands, but it's still the game of tennis and we'll be ready to go."
Minnesota played at the Badger Invitational (Jan. 28-31) but has not played in a dual yet this season.
The Badgers lost at No. 6 Illinois in a nonconference dual, 6-1, on Feb. 9. Wisconsin will play No. 15 Michigan on Friday night before heading to East Lansing on Sunday. Brett Forman, a four-time MVP for the Spartans during his time at MSU, will be back in East Lansing as he is now an assistant coach for the Badgers.
The Spartans are scheduled to play 16 Big Ten matches this spring, including seven in East Lansing. The Big Ten Tournament begins April 29 in Lincoln, Nebraska.
