EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State men's tennis team lost to Wisconsin, 7-0, Sunday afternoon at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
"Give credit to Wisconsin, they were ready and played well today," said MSU men's tennis head coach Gene Orlando. "The doubles point came down to the end, and I think Wisconsin used the momentum from that win into the singles matches. They jumped on us quick and we have to get off to a better start in order to put ourselves in a position to win. We'll learn from this and get better during the next week of practice heading into next weekend."
The Badgers (1-2) won the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead. Gabriel Huber and Robin Parts topped Graydon Lair and Jarreau Campbell in the second spot, 6-3, but Nick Williams and Kazuki Matsuno beat Tim Dzhurinskiy and Jared Pratt at No. 1, 6-3. On court three, Reed Crocker and Josh Mukherjee were tied with Lenard Soha and Mihailo Popovic, 5-5, but lost the final two games to UW's Lenard Soha and Mihailo Popovic.
In singles, the Badgers clinched the dual with victories on courts two, three and four, all in two sets. In the No. 1 spot, Mukherjee and Soha played a super tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets, and Soha came away with the 10-8 win. Luke Baylis finished his match on the sixth court, but fell to Robert Krill, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3).
Michigan State (1-3, 1-1 Big Ten) hits the road next week to face Purdue (Saturday, Feb. 27) and Indiana (Sunday, Feb. 28).
