EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State men's tennis team returns to action this weekend for road matches at Purdue and Indiana.
The Spartans (1-3, 1-1 Big Ten) will take on the Boilermakers Saturday, Feb. 27 at 12 p.m. in the Schwartz Tennis Center, followed by a dual against the Hoosiers on Sunday, Feb. 28 at 12 p.m. in the IU Tennis Center. Live video of both matches will be available via Playsight on purduesports.com and iuhoosiers.com.
Purdue (1-1) and Indiana (1-1) both split road duals last weekend, beating Nebraska but falling to Iowa.
On the first Big Ten weekend, Michigan State began conference play at home with a thrilling 4-3 comeback victory over Minnesota before falling to Wisconsin, 7-0. MSU men's tennis head coach Gene Orlando is looking to use the lessons learned from both duals to help the team in the second weekend of league action.
"I think the guys took a lot of positives out of the weekend," Orlando said. "We have been playing some really good doubles, and if we can win the doubles point, that puts you in every single match that we'll play. The guys put the work in and felt like they deserved to win against Minnesota. We feel like we can go into every match with an opportunity to win, and that's our goal.
"Obviously, it was a disappointing loss to Wisconsin, but again, I felt like there were a lot of factors that didn't go our way. After looking at the video, we had chances (against the Badgers). We had chances in doubles, and we had chances in singles; we just didn't capitalize on our opportunities. But a lot of things went our way against Minnesota. We're looking for consistency and I feel like we have the competitive spirit to do good things. We have a good opportunity ahead of us this weekend at Purdue and Indiana."
Following its road trip to Indiana, the Spartans will face Michigan in Ann Arbor on Sunday, March 7 at 3 p.m.
