EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State women's tennis team fell at Indiana, 4-3, Sunday afternoon at the IU Tennis Center in Bloomington, Indiana.
With the match tied at 3, the dual came down to No. 2 singles, as IU's Annabelle Andrinopoulos edged Maja Pietrowicz, 6-4, 6-7, 6-4, to clinch the victory for the Hoosiers.
The Spartans took an early 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point. Samantha Memije and Nicole Stephens beat Rose Hu and Sayda Hernandez at No. 3, 6-1, and
Pietrowicz and Mary Lewis defeated Andrinopoulos and Jelly Bozovic on the top court, 6-4.
Lauren Lemonds topped Bozovic at No. 4 singles, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5, to give MSU a 2-0 lead, but IU won at No. 5 and No. 6 to tie the dual at 2.
Memije claimed a third-set tiebreaker over Alexandra Staiculescu at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6, putting MSU back on top, 3-2.
At No. 1 singles, Laura Masic beat Lewis in three sets, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3, setting up the decisive match at No. 2 singles.
Michigan State (3-2, 3-1 Big Ten) returns to action on Friday, Feb. 26 to take on Ohio State in Columbus.
