Spartan Women’s Soccer Shuts Down Nebraska, 2-0
2/25/2021 6:37:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Senior Danielle Stephan provided two helpers in the win.
LIVONIA, Mich. – In its unusual home opener, the Michigan State women's soccer team shutout Nebraska, 2-0, at St. Joe's Sports Dome in Livonia, Michigan.
With the win, Michigan State improves to 1-0-1 this conference-only season. The Spartans are off to their best start since the 2015 season when they began 2-0-1 in Big Ten play. Nebraska now stands 0-1-1 on the young season.
"I am happy for the team; it has been a bizarre 12 months for everyone. First and foremost, we are just happy every time we get a chance to play, and to get a win after all that we have been through is great. I just want to take a moment and credit our medical staff, because without the work of sports medicine with COVID and all the other roles they have to play there is no way we get to this point. When you have a good day like this, celebrate it and take advantage of it," MSU head coach Tom Saxton added.
Early on Nebraska controlled possession, but the Spartan defense was able to absorb the blows from the Cornhuskers. Nebraska had four shots in the first 12 minutes of action. Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Kozal showed her dominance with three saves in the first 45 minutes.
Despite the strong start for the Huskers, it was the Spartans that found the back of the net first in the 44th minute. Junior forward Miranda Hart scored her first career goal off a beautiful pass from senior midfilder Danielle Stephan. Hart took the pass from the left side and snuck it past Husker goalkeeper Makinzie Short.
"That was just a brilliant soccer play by Danielle. She has a great soccer mind and is a great passer. The way she hesitated for a bit and sucked that defender in was great. This is Miranda's first opportunity as a junior to be part of the game in big moments, and she kept her composure and put it away. That really changed the game without a doubt." Saxton said.
The 1-0 Spartan lead hold for the first 45 minutes, despite Nebraska leading in shots 10-2.
In the second half, the Spartans continued control the pace of the game. The Huskers out-shot MSU in the final 45 minutes, but Michigan State remained more dangerous.
In the 66th minute, the Spartans doubled their lead with junior Abby Gardiner's first career goal. The ball once against came from Stephan on the left side. Gardiner chipped it in from seven yards out.
"It feels to finally get back on the field playing with the girls that I have been with the last four years. We are finally seeing our hard work pay off. It feels good, and I am going to hold on to this feeling for a while," Stephan added.
The Spartans will continue its homestand, facing Minnesota on Monday, March 1 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Joe's Sports Dome in Livonia.
