East Lansing, Mich.-Michigan State earned a split with Nebraska on Saturday in Leesburg, Florida.
The Cornhuskers took a 7-1 win in game one, earning head coach Rhonda Revelle her 1,000th coaching victory. In the nightcap, the Spartans scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to come away with a 6-3 victory in extra innings.
Joanna Bartz went a combined 3-for-6 on the day, while Caitie Ladd was 2-for-3 with an RBI in the second contest. MSU once again used all four pitchers in the doubleheader, with Alli Walker striking out seven in 3.2 innings of relief work in game one. Ashley Miller earned the win in game two, going five strong innings and striking out four, and recording a pair of 1-2-3 innings in the seventh and eighth.
MSU wraps up the first weekend of the season on Sunday with a doubleheader against Iowa that starts at 9 am.
GAME ONE
- A big Nebraska second inning put MSU in an early hole, thanks in large part to four MSU errors. In all, the Huskers put five on the scoreboard on just three base hits.
- Nebraska scored twice in the fourth, starting it off with back-to-back one-out doubles. The Spartans made a pitching change, as Alli Walker came in for Jala Wright. Walker surrendered the second run of the inning on a wild pitch and a base hit up the middle.
- MSU scored its only run of the game in the home half of the seventh. Joanna Bartz led off the frame with a single, and Jenae Wash doubled down the right field line to put runners in scoring position. Marissa Trivelpiece brought Bartz home on a ground ball to first for the RBI.
- Wright made her second start and pitched 3.1 innings, surrendering six hits and seven runs, but just two were earned. Walker came on in relief and gave up four hits in 3.2 innings, striking out seven.
- Camryn Wincher had a pair of base hits to lead MS at the plate, while Bartz and Wash each went 1-for-2 with a walk.
GAME TWO
- The Spartans put three runs on the board in the top of the third. Freshmen Alexis Barroso and Marissa Trivelpiece came up with their first collegiate base hits, and a double by Caitie Ladd brought home pinch runner Brooke Snyder. A Kendall Kates base hit brought home Trivelpiece and Caitie Ladd for the 3-0 lead.
- Nebraska scored single runs in the third, fifth, and sixth innings to tie things up. MSU had a great opportunity to blow the game open in the top of the sixth, but left the bases loaded after a Joanna Bartz double, Wash walk, and Wincher was hit by a pitch.
- The Spartans generated another three runs in the top of the eighth inning to earn their first win of the season. With the international tiebreaker in effect (placing a runner on second base to start extra innings), Jenae Wash singled to bring home runner Katie Quinlan, and Courtney Callahan and Mackenzie Meech added RBI singles to make it a 6-3 ballgame.
- Ashley Miller pitched a 1-2-3-seventh and eighth innings to preserve the MSU win. She pitched five relief innings, striking out four and surrendering two hits and two runs.
- Sarah Ladd got the start and gave up just one run in three innings of work, striking out five.
- Caitie Ladd was 3-for-4, while classmate Joanna Bartz went 2-for-4 on the day. Kates had two RBI.
- MSU had a season-best 11 base hits in game two after just six in game one earlier in the day.
