Sophia Franklin and Morgan Beadlescomb earn runner-up honors on Saturday.
GENEVA, Ohio - Junior Jenna Magness captured her first Big Ten Indoor Track & Field crown to pace Michigan State on the final day of action at SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio on Saturday.Â
"I thought that they stayed true to the things that we have been trying to get them to focus on, the biggest one is supporting one another as teammates, especially because track & field is like a couple of mini teams in one. And we are not all together at the same time, especially since we are more separated now because of COVID. That has been our challenge to them to start to invest in one another and support each other, and we saw that all throughout the weekend," Interim Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Lisa Breznau said.
After finishing as a runner-up last season, Magness took control to capture the gold medal with a stellar time of 15:51.46. Two of her Spartan teammates were right behind as MSU finished 1-3-4. Senior Lynsie Gram took the silver medal, crossing the line in 16:16.12, while junior India Johnson set a new personal best with a time of 16:22.56 to take fourth.
"It is tough to stay focused when there is that long week of being here and to show up with the added pressure, and they just showed up and handled it really well. I am really proud of the way they competed and stayed engaged during the race. This was India's first time scoring on a race on the track so that is progress for her," Breznau said. "Lynsie Gram is a little banged up, but she just wanted to go out there and compete with her team. Jenna was also phenomenal to go out there and get the win and become a Big Ten Champion."Â
In a tightly contested women's pole vault with 27 competitors, junior Sophia Franklin took second behind Michigan's Jessica Mercier with a best vault of 4.20m. She bested her Big Ten winning vault of 4.19m last season.
Junior Katie Osika took fourth in the final of the women's mile. Osika crossed the line with a time of 4:45.12, topping her preliminary time of    4:45.67. Senior Aimee Piercy continued her strong meet, crossing the line in 4:50.54.
In the women's 60m hurdle final, the Spartans had a pair of runners score. Junior Jaiden Paris finished sixth, crossing the line in 8.56. Freshman Kaia Scheffler continued her strong rookie campaign with an eighth-place finish with a time of 8.67. Senior Brooke Bogan was sixth in the 60m, clocking in at 7.49.
On the men's side, senior Morgan Beadlescomb finished second in a thrilling 5,000m race. The defending champion (13.42.45) crossed the line just behind Indiana's Ben Veatch, who won with a time of 13:42.08. Junior Joe Riordan earned a new PR in the 5,000m, clocking in at 14:24.25.
Freshman Ryan Talbot started the day for Michigan State with a sixth-place finish in the pole vault with high top vault of 5.05m. Talbot PR'd twice during the event, as he previous best was 4.85m at the B1G SPIRE Invitational.
"Ryan is really talented and seems to be fearless in some steps that he is making. I think having the  mulit behind him gave him a sense of 'well I don't have anything to lose right now' He actually PR'd twice during the event," Breznau added.
The Michigan State women ended the meet with 54 points which was good for fifth place up one from last year's finish. Â The men earned 21 points to take 12th place. Minnesota earned the women's title with 138 points, while the Iowa men won with 119 points.Â
