EAST LANSING, Mich. - In their dual match season opener, the Michigan State women's tennis team lost a heartbreaker to Penn State, 4-3 Friday at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
Michigan State falls so 0-1 on the young season, while Penn State improves to 1-0.
"We are really feel grateful to be back at what we like to do. I think that we can only take positive things away from this and get back to work. The good news is that we get to be at home next weekend too," MSU head coach Kim Bruno said.
The Nittany Lions took the doubles point winning at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Alexandra Nielsen and Gabby O'Gorman defeated junior Maja Pietrowicz and freshman Ayshe Can, 6-3. Frederikke Svarre and Samantha Smith stopped senior Mary Lewis and sophomore Dagmar Zdrubecka, 6-2. At the No. 3 spot, graduate student Samantha Memije and junior Nicole Stephens captured a 6-2 win.
"I liked us at moments. Obviously Maja (Maja Pietrowicz) was a standout. She got out there and got the job done, and we got a point under our belt. So I think, for a series of moments, we look really, really good, but that isn't going to win us matches. We need to be tough throughout all of the moments. No roller coaster rides. We just need to play point after point the way I know we can play," Bruno said.
Singles was a battle that came down to the last match. With the match tied 3-3, junior Lauren Lemonds took on Svarre. The two split the first two sets with Svarre taking the first (7-6) and Lemonds winning the second 6-3. The final set was back and forth with Svarre sneaking past Lemonds, 7-5.
Michigan State earned wins at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles. At the No. 3 position, Memije dropped Smith in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Pietrowicz powered past Olivia Ryan, 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 4 spot. At No. 5 singles, Can defeated Alexandra Nielsen, 7-5, 7-5.
Michigan State remains at home to take on Maryland in its Big Ten opener on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 11 a.m.
