Spartans Drop Doubleheader to Minnesota

East Lansing, Mich. – [RV] Minnesota earned a sweep over Michigan State in softball action on Saturday afternoon, earning 5-3 and 6-2 wins over the Spartans in Leesburg, Fl.
Junior ace Amber Fiser earned a save in game one and the win in game two, striking out seven total in eight innings of work, including four in the complete-game victory in the nightcap. MSU used all four of its pitchers in the doubleheader, three in each game. Alli Walker and Sarah Ladd took the losses.
For MSU, Caitie Ladd went a combined 3-for-7, Camryn Wincher had a pair of base hits, and freshman Alexis Barroso had a base hit in each game, including her first career homer in the second game. Jenae Wash tripled in the first contest.
The Spartans wrap up the weekend on Sunday with the series finale against the Gophers at 11:30 am.
GAME ONE: MINNESOTA 5, MSU 3
GAME TWO: MINNESOTA 6, MSU 2

GAME ONE: MINNESOTA 5, MSU 3
- Minnesota scored once in the home half of the first, a frame that featured two hit batters and an error. While the Gophers were able to get a run across, Sarah Ladd got out of the bases -loaded jam to leave them full.
- Senior Katelyn Kemmetmueller hit a solo homer in the third to double the Gopher lead to 2-0.
- Minnesota put together a two-out rally to push its lead to 3-0 in the fourth. A pair of two-out singles brough Ashley Miller out of the bullpen, and Mackenna Partain singled home a run.
- MSU scored a pair of runs in the fifth to make it a 3-2 ballgame. Alexis Barroso drew a one-out walk and Cam Wincher singled to shallow right. Courtney Callahan singled through the left side to bring home pinch runner Zaquai Dumas, getting the Spartans on the board and leaving two runners in scoring position for pinch hitter Erica Holt, who put down a ground ball to first to score Wincher.
- Minnesota got the two runs back in the bottom of the fifth on a Natalie DenHartog homer.
- Caitie Ladd doubled down the left-field line to lead off the sixth, and came around to score on a two-out Jenae Wash triple.
- The Gophers threatened in the bottom of the sixth with a walk and an MSU error, but Alli Walker stranded runners at the corners.
- Camryn Wincher led off the seventh with a double, and the Gophers went to Amber Fiser in the circle. The Gopher ace struck out the next three batters to seal her team's victory.
- Sarah Ladd went 3.2 innings, and was responsible for three runs, (two earned) and struck out six. Ashley Miller came on in the fourth inning, and surrendered a pair of runs, and Alli Walker went the final 1 2/3 innings. Autumn Pease struck out nine Spartans in six innings, allowing five hits.
- MSU committed four errors in the contest, tying its season high set previously against Nebraska.
GAME TWO: MINNESOTA 6, MSU 2
- Michigan State plated a run in the bottom of the first when leadoff hitter Caitie Ladd reached on an error, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and came home on a single by Mackenzie Meech.
- Minnesota countered with a three-run third inning. A hit batter and a walk put two runners on for junior Emily Hansen, who doubled and brought both home. Jala Wright came on for Alli Walker, and gave up a single to score Hansen for the 3-1 Gopher advantage.
- Minnesota scored twice more in the fourth on three base hits, extending their lead out to 5-1.
- Freshman Alexis Barroso homered to left in the bottom of the fourth to trim the deficit to three, 5-2. It was her first collegiate homer.
- A solo homer by freshman catcher Sara Kinch got the run back in the top of the fifth to round out the scoring.
- The Spartans looked to mount a comeback in the home half of the sixth, as Meech led off the inning getting plunked by a pitch and moved to second on a ground ball out, then third on a wild pitch. Camryn Wincher walked to put runners at the corners, but Fiser worked out of the jam with a strikeout.
- Caitie Ladd was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
- Alli Walker started the game and went 2.1 innings, surrendering three earned runs and walking two. Jala Wright gave up two runs in 1.2 innings, and Sarah Ladd went the final three frames, allowing just one base hit and striking out two. Amber Fiser went the distance for Minnesota, striking out four and walking one, allowing the four MSU hits.
